The Far North Queensland Australia is home to the town of Port Douglas. The beauty of this area draws many tourists. With its array of carnivals, outdoor activities, and the sheer beauty of the scenery, Port Douglas is a popular stop.

The beautiful backdrop is probably the first thing tourists notice when they visit this area. Known for being one of the few areas in the world where green meets blue, Port Douglas is home to the Great Barrier Reef in the water and the Daintree Rainforest. Port Douglas can proudly boast that it is the only place in the world with two “treasures” such as these.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This underwater botanical garden is so large that it can be seen from space. Stretching over two thousand kilometers along the Queensland coast it is home to thousands of species of plants and animals. The Great Barrier Reef is considered the largest known reef in the world and is made completely from corals in every size, shape and color imaginable. Tourists flock to this area to snorkel and dive and take in the natural beauty of the reef and enjoy the wide array of animals that call the reef home. Many of the animals that call the reef home are unique to the area, whether you’re an expert diver, snorkeler, novice diver or even a non-swimmer there are tours that can meet your needs so that you can view this rare underwater gem.

After, or before if you prefer, you visit the Great Barrier Reef be sure to go to the Daintree national forest. Daintree National Park consists of the oldest rainforest on the planet. It is split into three main areas, Mossman Gorge, Daintree National Park, and Cape Tribulation. It is estimated that this area is around one hundred forty million years old. Mossman Gorge is the steep valley around the Mossman River. There beautiful creeks and tropical rainforests to enjoy while here. This area is good for viewing the local wild life and is home to many Aboriginal heritage sites. The area in between the gorge and Daintree River is considered to be the Daintree National Park Manly consisting of tropical rain forests visitors can spot crocodiles or unique birds. The Cape Tribulation section is the costal section of the park. Here you can see coral reefs as well as the tropical rain forests. This is the area of Port Douglas where green and blue meet.

Once you’ve taken in the natural beauty that is Port Douglas, it’s time to enjoy some of the shopping that the city has to offer. With a variety of shops ranging from specialty boutiques to seaside markets there is something for every taste. You can find things like rain forest crafts, books, designer clothing and much more. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the market for a simple souvenir to take home with you or you are looking for a specific type of art, Port Douglas has it all.

Port Douglas is also home to some major festivals. At the end of May for ten days you can enjoy the Port Douglas Carnival. The Port Douglas Carnival starts with the Macrossan Street Parade and is extremely popular.
