Kaprun, Austria

A tiny village with a little over 2,000 people in it, the village of Kaprun is nevertheless famous across the whole of Austria as well as Europe due to its status as an all year sports activity centre. What this means then, is that come sun, rain or snow, the keen sportsperson can enjoy a remarkable array of different sporting activities.

Whilst skiing is without a doubt, one of the most popular of the various sporting activities that take place in the village, the popularity of it has diminished quite considerably in recent years, in no small part, due to the tragedy of the Kaprun disaster which occurred in 2000. One of the most commonly used slopes for skiing is the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and which is accessible by means of an ascending train car in order to allow for the effective and speedy access of the Glacier.

Keen to shake off the constant reminders of the scandal of the Kaprun disaster, the news of the construction of a brand new spa and pool complex has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the inhabitants of the village. Due for completion in 2010, the new complex will certainly help to revitalise the area quite considerably and already there is a great deal of media attention devoted to it.

Perhaps not the most glamorous of landmarks, but notable nevertheless, Kaprun is also renowned for its power plant which was constructed during the Second World War and which is powered by a series of hydroelectric dams and generators. Surprisingly, these have proven to be especially popular with foreign tourists, although whether they are so popular due to their architecture, sheer colossal size or their close proximity to such gigantic volumes of water is not entirely clear!

With sporting activities throughout the year along with stunning scenic backdrops you will be spoilt for choice. The sporting activities that you will find here besides that of skiing or snowboarding are ice surfing on the Lake Zell when the lake has frozen over. If you prefer high altitude sporting activities a trip in a light aircraft can reveal to you the beauty of Kaprun. In addition to looking at the town from above you can also try your hand at hang gliding, paragliding, and parachuting.

Of course you will also find that you can go riding while you are in Kaprun. The types of riding that you can do while you are here, includes sleigh rides, horseback riding and even Llama riding. While these are some of the sporting activities that can be done while you are here, there are other more sights to be seen in this town. For example you will be able to visit the Gastein Valley. On the other hand you can look at the ice cave which is found at Werfen. The salt mines at Hallein and even Krimml which is the highest waterfall in the whole of Europe are other things that you can see while you are in Kaprun.
