Kitzbühel, Austria

Kitzbühel that is in Austria is considered a medieval city which is located in the Tyrol area near the Kitzbühel Ache river, and serves nowadays as a ski resort in the enter of the Kitzbühel (Bezirk) district.

Kitzbühel's area spreads over about 59 square kilometers which is about 23 square miles, 762 meters above sea level (2,500 feet) and has about 8,500 citizens, making it a population density of about 145 people per square kilometer (377 per square mile).

The first people we know that have inhabited the area are the Illyrians which mined copper in the hill region near Kitzbühel, in 1100 and 800 BC. At about 15 BC the Roman emperor occupied the area after taking over the Alps region, but after the Roman empire in the west crumbled, the Bavarii started settling in in this region (the Kitzbühel region) and started clearing areas for more houses to be built in.

Kitzbühel eventually became a part of Upper Bavaria and got city rights in 1271 from the duke of Bavaria. It was fortified to prevent more attacks and conquests. It soon became a trade center that slowly grew in the following centuries and didn't experience wars any longer.
Due to the lack of wars and the economical and populace growth, part of the wall was destroyed to build new houses.

But it was eventually conquered by the Austrian emperor called Maximilian, in 1504, and was eventually given to the Austrian state in 1840. But despite the conquest, the wars that raged in during the 18th and 19th century never reached the city and it soon became a part of Bavaria again after a rebellion, and reunited with Tyrol after Napoleon's rule ended.

Nowadays it mainly serves as a tourism spot and a known winter sport resort, which is located between the Hahnenkamm mountains which are 1712 meters high (5616 feet) and the Kitzbühel Horn mountain which is 1996 meters high (6549 feet high) which serve as fancy ski and snowboarding resorts.
There are also annual world cup ski races which take place in the Hahnenkamm mountain which you can observe if you arrive during the right time, and if you book your hotel early enough.
There's also a downhill race which is considered to be the most important event in the world cup.

The city is also famous for being the place where both the 2007 and the 2008 ITU Triathlon World Cup took place in (in the Schwarzsee lake nearby).
You can reach Kitzbühel using the B161 highway which is connected with the St Johann which is located in Tirol, and intersects with the B170 highway.
You can also take the train which has several train stops in the area.

If you want to arrive in a climate that suits you, you better avoid the start and finish of the year, due to it being extra cold, and arrive in the middle of the year, unless you want to partake in the winter sports available.
