As the capital of the Zell am See district in the state of Salzburg , Zell am See is not only the transport hub of the district but is a major tourist destination. Zell am See offers visitors wonderful scenery, architectural sites and lots of outdoor activities. For the architectural enthusiast the place to stop is St. Hippolyte’s Church. This church is the oldest known remnants of the Pinzgau region. The ancient church was built in a Romanesque style with three naves (areas of the church where the congregation sits). The naves were originally covered with a Gothic roof but it has since been replaced with a regular flat wooden one. The narthex (area outside the sanctuary and nave) is still covered with the Gothic style roof. One of the main architectural features of St. Hippolyte’s Church is the four marble pillars. These columns hold up the walkway and in between the columns is a beautiful net-vault. This site is a must see for tourists especially since the church’s tower is a prominent skyline feature. For those who love to go skiing, visit the Glacier of Kaprun. This 3,000 metre glacier is perfect for winter skiing. Often due to weather conditions, mainly wind, the many of the ski lifts are closed. However, in the event that the ski lifts are closed, you can still reach the top by taking the cable car instead. This will allow you to not only reach the top but enjoy the beauty of Zell am See. Those who don’t wish to ski but still want to enjoy the glacier of Kaprun there are hiking routes on the glacier. You can hike the trails on your own or take a guided tour. You will see many lovely brightly coloured flowers, rock formations, even herds of sheep. There is even a glacier lake which is a wonderful site to behold. Another good area to ski is Kitzsteinhorn Mountain. Kitzsteinhorn Mountain has skiing conditions year round, and is one of the highest points in Austria. The mountain is not located directly in Zell am See but is right nearby, next to the town of Kaprun. There is also a man-made lake that tourists must see. Zell am See is not just a sightseeing stop. There are many wonderful little restaurants in the area. Many of them reasonably priced. Tourists wanting a taste of Austria should try the Gastof Stienwarf. This restaurant features food that is local to the culture and is reasonably priced for visitors. Another tasty stop is Basmati. Also priced within a tourist’s budget this restaurant features Arabic and Indian cuisine, giving visitors a little something different. There are even some hotels that include meals in the price of the room. These hotels offer breakfast, dinner and afternoon cakes to their guests as part of their stay. This way many of the meals are covered and visitors will only incur the extra expense of eating out if they so choose. Zell am See is a breathtaking town and is worth the trip if you plan on stopping in Austria.
