For those who are looking for a great variety of choices in the places you visit, Ostende (or Oostende as it is called in Dutch, the native language) might just be the right place. Located in the Flemish province of Belgium, Oostende offers you culture, history and an amazing beach. The city also offers different events, things to do and discount opportunities for tourists. One of those is the 'stadspas' (literally translated it means city pass) which will give you discounts on museums, events and a lot more.
A couple of main spots of Oostende have recently been renovated among which is the dike at the sea which now contains a beautiful promenade. If you would like to visit a museum without spending a lot of money, the museum of arts by the sea 'Mu.ZEE' is one of the hotspots. The museum 'De Plate' is highly recommended to those who are interested in the local history and historical events. But the one museum you would not want to miss out on is Fort Napoleon. As the name indicates, the fort was built by Napoleon for defense and it was also used by the Germans in World War I and II. It was restored and opened to the public in 2000 and now you can take one of the tours through its history and enjoy a meal afterwards in the restaurant.
If you are in for a more active trip and want to get some excitement, Oostende offers you a chance to see the city from a different point of view by taking a balloon trip. Or you can stay with both feet on the ground and go to the local horse race track, visit one of the many sporting events or take a cycling trip. For the thrill seekers among you there are multiple diving schools and you can even go kayaking.
In Oostende you can also find a great variety of restaurants, bars and clubs. When you are looking for a local dish, you will find it in Groote Huys, a restaurant located in the city center which mainly serves Belgian dishes. Bars and pubs can be found in the Langestraat where the heart of the nightlife and entertainment lies. From small stages with local performers to the bigger clubs, you will find them there. Looking for something quieter? Try the lounge bar Tao. Or try and win some money in the local casino.
Traveling to and within Oostende is easy. When taking the car you will find it is just along the highway. The airport Oostende-Brugge is just a few minutes from the city center and the railway station is located centrally. There are also multiple places where you can rent bicycles.
Belgium might not be the first country to think of when you think of traveling in Europe, but as you see both Belgium and Oostende has so much more to offer then what comes to mind. You can plan any kind of trip in a city like this. The wide variety of activities, 'must-sees' and unique events make Oostende well worth visiting.
