Nesebŭr, Bulgaria

Nesebur that is in Bulgaria is also known as Menebria, Mesimvria and Mesembria. It is also sometimes referred to as Nesebur.
Nesebar is an ancient city and a famous and sought after seaside resort that is located next to the Black sea in Bulgaria. It located in the Nesebur municipality in the Burgas province.

Nesebar is also called "the pearl of the Black sea" or "Bulgaria's Dubrovnik". Dubrovnik is a Croatian city in the Adriatic sea's coast and is a prominent tourist attraction and is part of the World Heritage Sites list that UNESCO compiled, which Nesebar is also part of.
World Heritage sites can vary from a forest or a lake up to a building or a city, and being on that list means it is maintained by the World Heritage program that UNESCO governs over. Its goal is to preserve important and historical structures and places for future generations, where people can observe first hand the world's history.

Nesebur is one of the most frequented tourist attractions and it serves both tourists that want to learn about its 3 millennia wide history, students that the city relates to their studies, or vacationers that want to take a break from their daily life and enjoy a week at the beach.
Nesebur has a population of about 11,000 people.

Nesebur started its days as a Thracian settlement and was called Menebria but after that became a Greek colony. The town has seen many rulers including the Romans that ruled it in 71 BC and was a big part of the Byzantine empire.
When in the city you'll see old churches and ruined fortifications which are an indication of the many wars that were fought over the control of Nesebur and the type of population it had and has.

Nesebur eventually evolved into a fisherman town for Greeks in the end of the 19th century but now is a seaside resort for Bulgaria and serves mainly tourists. Parts of the town were restored to maintain its heritage.
Nesebur is though to have the highest amount of churches per capita, and those churches include very famous ones.

The churches were built all over Nesebur and were built in different time - the Byzantine, Bulgarian, the Ottoman etc. The churches which survived a long time are a testament to the architectural plenty of Nesebur and of its rich history.
Some of the earliest churches were built in the 5th and 6th century and include the Church of St Sophia (The Old Bishopric, also known as Stara Mitropoliya) and the Basilica of the Holy Mother of God Eleusa. You can see other churches in the area which are also named based on saints.

Due to its famous locations and historical importance, a gap in the eastern Livingston island has been named after Nesebur - the Nesebur gap. It is also called Sedlovina Nesebur and is 1.3 kilometers wide.

It was mapped back in 1991 by Servicio Geografico del Ejercito which is of Spanish decent.
