Vlas, Bulgaria
Vlas that is in Bulgaria is also known as Sveti Vlas and is called Saint Blaise in Bulgarian, and Larissa in the Greek language (or Monasterion) and is a seaside resort as well as a town that is located in the Black Sea, which is an inland sea that is surrounded by Europe and Antaolia as well as the Caucasus. The Black Sea connects (eventually) to the Atlantic ocean, but first connects to the Mediterranean sea and the Aegean seas, as well as several straits.
Sveti Vlas is located in the coast of Bulgaria and in the municipality of Nesebar, and in the province of Burgas. The Nesebar municipality is also known as Obshtine Nesebar in the Bulgarian language, and is a municipality in Bulgaria that is made up of the north end of the Black Sea coast, and borders with the Byala municipality in the north, as well as with Dolni Chiflik, and also borders with Pomorie in the west. In the east there is the Black Sea a as a natural border, and it is close to the international airport.
The population of Sveti Vlas consists of about 3,900 people and the town is located to the feet of the southern slopes that are part of the Balkan mountains. The Balkan Mountains are called Stara planina in the Serbian language as well as in the Bulgarian language, and translates to "The Old Mountain". The Balkan Mountains are basically a range of mountains that run for about 560 kilometers - from the peak of the Vrashka Chuka, which is close to the Bulgaria - Serbia border, and up to Cape Emine in Bulgaria which is located in the Black Sea.
Sveti Vlas is known to have been populated as early as the second century AD by both the Thracians and the Greeks, which were called Larissa back then. The name Sveti Vlas came from the 14th century after a monastery called Saint Blaise that existed in the region was burned down several times by pirate raids. Pirates raided the Saint Blaise monastery from the 14th century to the 18th century.
After that, the Ottoman ruled Bulgaria and Sveti Vlas and called the Saint Blaise monastery the Manastir (which simply means "monastery") or the Kucuk manastir. The name Sveti Vlas became official only way back in the year 1886, and it became a sea resort back in 1963. It only became a town officially in the year 2006 (on February the second).
Sveti Vlas is famous for being the only location in the entire area of the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea where its beaches are facing to the south directly.
Sveti Vlas is close to Sunny Beach, but is quieter than it and serves as the more laid back alternative to it. But nowadays more and more hotels are being built as well as holiday apartments which makes the distance between Sunny Beach and Sveti Vlas smaller. You can reach Sveti Vlas either by boat, taxi or by a bus.
