Montréal, Canada

The island city of Montreal is the second largest city in Canada and the largest in the province of Quebec where the city is located. Montreal is full of architecture, interesting neighborhoods, shopping and museums.
Anyone taking a trip to Montreal has to go to the city’s name sake. Mont Real, translated is Mount Royal, is a triple peaked hill in the middle of the city. From the top of Mont Real you can see downtown Montreal and beyond. This breath taking view is worth the hike up the hill and favorite landmark sight lines are marked for your benefit.
After you’ve sampled Montreal from above why not check it out from below. One of the most popular stops in Montreal is the “Underground City”. The Underground City is so named because it links all major buildings and shopping centers in the area underground. This mode of visiting one shopping center and then another is favorable no matter the season but is especially appreciated during the winter months when Montreal sees bitter cold temperatures and ample snow fall.
When taking in the beautiful architecture of Montreal, be sure to stop by the Notre-Dame Basilica. This neo-gothic building was built in the 1820s on the site of a smaller church. Its stain glass windows and statues are a site to behold. With rich alter work and poly-chrome carvings; Notre-Dame is an architectural triumph. No trip to Montreal would be complete without a viewing of this historic church.
While checking out architecture, stop by the Olympic Stadium. Built for the 1976 Olympic Games the stadium is still in use for some sporting events today. The world’s tallest inclined tower is located at the Olympic Stadium. You can purchase a ticket to travel to the top of this interesting piece of work. It’s worth a trip.
If you are visiting Montreal in the early fall months, be sure to take a walk or drive around to enjoy the fall foliage. The fall foliage is a wonderful attraction in Montreal, its beauty awe inspiring. Since winds can prematurely blow leaves off of the trees it is difficult to predict the best time to see the colors of fall in Montreal but they usually peak around mid September.
Montreal is also home to several museums. If you are interested in architecture visit the Canadian Center for Architecture. For those interested in fine arts the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is for you. The Musee d’art Contemporain is a wonderful contemporary art museum for those fans.
What trip to Montreal would be complete without a visit to its famous casino? The Casino de Montreal is a multilevel building of food, drink and gambling. Those feeling especially lucky should visit this famous building.
Montreal, the island city, is a wonderful place for tourists to sample a wide variety of activities.
