Within the province of British Columbia, Canada you will find the resort town of Whistler. This resort is a popular tourist destination for people who are interested in snow skiing. You can find the resort located 125 kilometers north of the city of Vancouver. This Canadian resort can be found in the southern areas of the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains. While there are many people who will call this resort Whistler, its official name is The Resort Municipality of Whistler.

As this resort town of Whistler is quite popular with tourists you will generally find that over two million people are known to visit here every year. The most popular sporting activities which take place are alpine skiing and that of mountain biking. The mountain biking takes place on the Whistler-Blackcomb area. The resort and its nearby surroundings are styled in a pedestrian type village which has won numerous awards.

The 2010 Winter Olympics took place in Whistler and in Cypress Mountain which is located near Vancouver. During these winter games in Whistler you will be able to see freestyle skiing, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing and all forms of sliding events. The snowboarding events will take place at Cypress Mountain. The resort town of Whistler originally was known as a logging town. At this point in its history the town’s name was known as Alta Lake.

Since the settlement of Alta Lake was known for its pristine amounts of snow a number of investors began planning on building a ski resort in the area. Thus the resort town of Whistler came into being. The first phase of the resort opened in 1967 in the Creekside area and the second resort phase which was opened in 1980 was located on Blackcomb Mountain. These two resorts were merged in 1988 and the full scale upgrading and development of the Whistler Resort Village began soon after the merger.

In addition to skiing you will find that the resort town of Whistler is a great place to engage in other sporting activities. These will range from mountain biking, backcountry and cross-country skiing, golf, table tennis and even hiking. For hiking, mountain biking and golfing activities you will need to spend some time in Whistler during the summer months. In the summer months you will find Lost Lake a great place to come and relax. You will find the water in the lake to be much warmer than the other lakes which are in the Whistler Valley area. You can relax on the lake beach or you can explore the surrounding area via the trails which abound here. These trails are perfect for exploring via cycle or walking. In the winter months this Lost Lake are is the perfect place for you to go cross-country skiing.
