Makarska, Croatia

Going on a holiday in Croatia can also mean that you are looking forwards to visiting the city of Makarska. This beautiful coastal town will provide you with a peaceful holiday but with all of the amenities and facilities that you require for a good time. The small town of Makarska is located on the coast of Croatia along the Adriatic Sea and it is located between the Biokovo Mountains and the Adriatic Sea.

The city is noted for its palm-fringed promenade, where you will find fashionable cafés, bars and boutiques which overlook the picturesque harbor where many pleasure crafts can be found moored. Along the beach area the city also has camping grounds for those who like to spend their nights underneath the stars.

The main sights you can find in Makarska will include St. Mark's Cathedral which was built during the 17th century. You will find this cathedral in the main square of the city. While the cathedral is noteworthy you may enjoy a visit to a 16th century Franciscan monastery.

This monastery houses a library with numerous books and rare incunabula. The basement of the monastery houses a malacological museum. This museum apparently has the largest collection of snails, shells and mussels in the world. This is not the end of your adventures in Makarska however.

Nature lovers will enjoy hiking along the Biokovo Mountain range. This mountain is actually part of a mountain range which runs by Croatia. Biokovo Mountain is the highest mountain in Dalmatia and the second highest in Croatia rising to 1762 metres at its highest point. As you hike along the various pathways you should take care as there are species of poisonous snake that lives around this area.

Another area of nature you may enjoy is that of white water rafting or kayaking. You will find that the Cetina River which is found about a half hours drive from Makarska. As you are traveling down the river you will find that it is mostly calm excepting for a few places which can involve fast traveling down river and one section which is known to be dangerous.

For those of you who would rather take a tour there is a tour agency which offers guided trips down the river. History buffs will enjoy seeing the cave where Marshal Tito's Partisans hid from the Nazis during World War II. Another interesting way to spend your holiday would be to visit the various beaches of Makarska. You can take part in sporting activities like swimming, parasailing, and snorkeling, and even take boat trips to see the area around the city.

While the sun bathing crowd may feel that getting a tan is one of their primary goals, you will need to understand that the beach area is full of small pebbles and not sand. As these pebbles can make sunbathing quite painful you might want to use a mat to soften the effect of these pebbles.
