Opatija, Croatia

The country of Croatia is a beautiful place. Here you will find many intriguing and beautiful cities and towns to investigate and one which you should see is that of Opatija. This town can be found just south of the town of Rijeka by the Adriatic coast. You will discover that this town is cosily situated in a sheltered position at the foot of the Učka Mountain in the Gulf of Kvarner. The town can be reached from Triete by railway and you can also travel here from Pula via the roadways. No matter how you reach this resort you will find that it a pleasant and welcoming place to be in.

For many people a resort needs to be either a summer resort or that of a winter resort. Yet here at Opatija you will find a resort which caters to the needs of all of its client’s right year around. The various services and facilities that you can find here are just a few indicators of the great holiday that you can enjoy when you come to Opatija. You will find that in addition to the wonderful services to be found at the resort there are other sights to be seen outside of the resort itself.

Of these you may enjoy visiting the Benedictine abbey San Giacomo della Priluca which was built in the 14th century. You can find the abbey in Saint Jacobs Park or as it is called in Croatian Park Svetog Jakova. While this abbey is a great place to visit you might be interested in knowing that the resort gained its name from the abbey. If you look at the Italian version of the abbey you will find that abbazia means abbey and in Croatian opatija – such as the name of the resort – also means abbey.

Another interesting religious building that you may be interested in visiting in Opatija is that of the Saint Jacob church which was built in 1506. In 1937 Saint Jacob church was newly enlarged and the new building stands on the same spot as the previous church. In addition to visiting the Saint Jacob church you may like to see the Church of the Annunciation. This Opatijachurch was designed in the neo-Romanesque style and it has a distinctive green cupola. The entire church including that of the cupola was designed by the architect Karl Seidl in 1906.

By the Juraj Šporer art pavilion you will find the statue of the Maiden with the Seagull. This statue was created by Zvonko Car in 1956. The entire statue is positioned on a promontory just in front of the art pavilion. The statue is considered to be one of the symbols of Opatija. Prior to this statue being placed here there used to be a glided Madonna statue. This statue was destroyed by communists at the end of WW II. A new glided version of this statue can be found standing in front of the Saint Jacob Church.

Once you have done your sightseeing you may wish to visit Angiolina which is the town park of Opatija. Here in Angiolina you will see many different species of plants from all over the world.
