Plitvička Jezera, Croatia
Croatia, officially know as the Republic of Croatia, gained independence in 1991. Croatia is found on the southeastern part of Europe, and is divided into 21 counties. One of the counties located on the eastern part of Croatia is Lika-Senj. Similarly, the administrative part of Lika-Senj is divided into 4 towns and 8 municipalities, one of which is Plitvička Jezera.
Historically, this part of the country has played a vital role in stopping the enemy advances during the Croatian war of Independence and during the Krajina uprising. Plitvička Jezera is one of the major tourist destinations in Croatia and is also a major source of income.
Plitvička Jezera is largely famous because of a national park known as the Plitvice Lakes National Park. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is located close to Bosnia Herzegovina border, and it is one of the eight national parks in Croatia. Built in 1949, it is also the largest and oldest park of Croatia. This park has the prestigious honour of being named in UNESCO's World Heritage List. Interestingly, when war broke out in 1992 it was placed on the list of World Heritage sites in danger but was later removed from that list in 1996. This park attracts more than a million visitors each year.
The lakes of the park, which total sixteen in number, are a well visited tourist destination. The sixteen lakes are divided into two clusters – the Upper Lake, and the Lower Lake. Twelve lakes make up the Upper Lake and four lakes make up the Lower Lake. It is also noteworthy that the water in these lakes is full of limestone.
All these lakes have their own distinctive colours from blue to grey to green and so on, making it interesting to try and see all of them if you can. A large number of fish can also be seen in these lakes.
Lakes are not the only interesting thing in the parks as there are also caves and forests. You can also find a wide range of animals and birds species here. Some rare species of fauna have also been found breeding in this park land.
Plitvice Lakes National Park also has a waterfall with water coming down from around 80 metres. The best part of the waterfall is that it interconnects all the 16 lakes that are there in the park. Apart from being a park, Plitvice Lakes National Park also has cafés and specially designated picnic areas for people to relax around in. Surprisingly enough (or maybe not) Plitvice Lakes National Park also has 12 hotels in it.
Talking about hotels, another major tourist attraction in Plitvička Jezera is Hotel Jezero. Located at the heart of Plitvice Lakes National Park, this hotel is closest to the largest lake in the park, and offers entertainment to people of all ages. It has night clubs, dancing bars, and massage centres as well as children’s playrooms. Due to its location, it has also become the ideal place for business meetings and other similar things.
