Poreč, Croatia

Porec Croatia is located on the west coast of Istria and was once a small harbor town. Now a bustling tourist stop Porec is known not just for its culture but for its beauty and cleanliness too, a virtual rarity in this day and age.
Porec is an old city steeped in Roman Castrum structures. These Roman Castrum structures can still be seen in the city today.
With a city as old as Porec, one of the main tourist stops is one of the most ancient buildings in the city. Built in 553 the Euphrasian Basilica is one of the most important historical sites in all of Porec. The Euphrasian Basilica has been granted the status of a World Historical Site by UNECO. This Basilica has marble slabs with mother of pearl and the apse contains wonderful mosaics. This enormous work of art is a must stop during your visit.
Other than the Euphrasian Basilica there are many other cultural sites to behold. The Pentagonal Tower is one such site. This tower is located at the entrance to the old city, on the central street. The Pentagonal Tower was erected in the fifteenth century. It was built in a gothic style with a lion façade. While enjoying the beauty of the structure be sure to stop in and enjoy a meal as well. There is a restaurant located in the tower for visitors to enjoy.
Also built in the fifteenth century, the Gothic Palace was enjoyed by those who had money to spend on extravagant housing. Trying to keep up with the Venetians this Palace (or house actually), was built in the Venetian style.
Whereas the Euphrasian Basilica is one of the oldest manmade structures that can be viewed during a visit to Porec, the Cave Baredine is among the oldest natural sites that can be viewed. The beautiful geoformations found in the Cave Baredine were all created by the eroding away of the rock from water. Some of these formations are of an impressive size, some reaching 10 metres (32.81 feet) in length. Some of these formations even resemble things like a snowman, a milkmaid and even a sculpture of our lady. These caves descend 66 metres below the ground. Please bear in mind that the guided walking tour through these caves takes about forty minutes so plan your trip accordingly.
But looking at ancient relics is not the only thing to do in Porec. For those who want some fun in the sun Porec has plenty of options for you. You can take a small boat out as long as it uses oars, sails or small motors to run it, any boat larger than three metres will first need a permit from the port director. Also diving is allowed in certain areas as long as you have a diving permit. There is also plenty of hiking, biking and angling to do if it so pleases you.
Porec is a city teeming with history, culture and fun.
