Amboise, France

Visitors to France can travel to the small market town of Amboise. You will find that this town is situated on the banks of the Loire River. It is part of the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. In the heyday’s of this town it used to be where the home of the French Royal Court. Today however it is a market town which attracts visitors of another kind to its doorstep. Not too far from the town – in fact only 18 kilometers away – you will find the Château de Chenonceau. This château was built close to the small village of Chenonceaux and the River Cher.

There are many interesting places that you can visit while you are in Amboise. Of these you may want to see the Musée de la Poste. You will be able to find this museum in the Hôtel Joyeuse. The various museum exhibits that you will be able to see in this museum will show you the evolution about the delivery system which is used by the postal service. As you look at these exhibits and trace the history of the postal delivery service you will be able to see the similarities and differences which can be found in the past service and the present day postal service.

Once you have looked at the exhibits which can be seen in this museum of Amboise you may want to head towards the Pagode de Chanteloup. This Chinese pagoda is about 44 meters in height and it was built in 1775 under the orders of the Duke of Choiseul. The pagoda is layered into seven different sections. Each of one of these sections has been designed to be smaller than the one preceding it. You will find there is an inner staircase which reaches to the different sections of this building. Each of these levels and the accompanying staircase is open to the public.

Another interesting sight that you will be able to see while you are in Amboise is that of a turtle which is topped by a teddy bear figure. This is a statue that you will be able to see on top of a 19th century fountain which was designed by John Oswald. The fountain with its fun looking statue can be found in front of the places where the town’s markets are held. In addition to looking at fun statues like this you will also be able to visit the Clos Lucé. This was the manor house where Leonardo da Vinci lived while he was in Amboise at the invitation of King Francis I of France. The king’s château is located not too far from the manor.

This château of King Francis I is called the Château d’ Amboise. It dominates the town as it is just 500 meters away from Amboise itself. You will find that in addition to exploring the surrounding countryside of Amboise, the many narrow streets of the town have some marvelous looking buildings which are timbered.
