Arles, France

Arles that is in France is also known as Arle, and is located in the south of France in the Bouches-du-Rhone area which means "Mouths of the Rhone" - it got it name from the Rhone River. Arles is located in the Provence province, which is a region on the Mediterranean which is close to Italy.

Arles was erected by the Greeks way back in the sixth century BC and was called Theline back then. It has been captured in 535BC and its name changed to Arelate, and the romans captured it in 123BC and expanded it and turned it into an important city.
Arles which was back then known as Arelate by the Romans was an important city and was located in the Gallia Narbonensis province, and had a turf of 99 acres.

Arles has been used by the Romans as a HQ for military operations and became a favored city by Constantine the first who erected baths there which you can still see if you visit the city nowadays.
Arles was also slowly becoming a religious and cultural center during the times of the Roman empire, and served as a key location for philosophers and for Christianity.

In more modern times Arles has still remained an economically important city because it was a major port for merchandises since it was located next to the Rhone river, but then the railways started to appear, a lot of the trade that took place via the Rhone river was stopped, and the city became a smaller one which attracted tourists on occasion.

The city is also known by the famous painting by the artist Vincent van Gogh, who visited the city on the 21st of February back in 1888 and drew one of its cafes.
During his stay in Arles he was very inspired and produced over 300 paintings, which among those are included The Night Cafe, the Yellow Room, Starry Night Over the Rhone and many more. Sadly, he soon became mentally unstable and had to be confined to an asylum.

Due to the varied and rich history of Arles, it has many Roman and Romanesque monuments lying around, from buildings to statues, which you can visit if you want to learn about the city's history first hand, or if you are a tourist that is interested in seeing Arles' beautiful sights.
You can go to the Arles arena and see the Arles oblisk which is called locally Obelisuqe d'Arles which is a Roman obelisk that was erected in the center of the Place de la Republique in the 4th century, and is located besides the town hall.
It was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is being preserved.

While in Arles you can also go to see the Roman Theater which is designed in a similar design to the early Greek theaters and got most of its design from the Theatre of Pompey which is located in Italy and is the first one of its kind.
