Carcassonne, France
Probably the second biggest tourist destination in France, Carcassonne is a unique city indeed. What makes it so special is its layout. Half of Carcassonne lies above the rest in a fortress. The city also has its own airport, so you most likely won’t need to hitch a ride when you land. The weather here is usually pretty warm all year round, so you can plan your summer or winter vacations here and still have a wonderful time. Because half of the city sits high up, the view of the surrounding area is wonderful. Speaking of the surrounding area, there are also many interesting areas floating around the city, so a day-trip with a rental car may very well be included in your plans. It isn’t a coincidence that Carcassonne is second only to Paris in planned vacations, so it may very well be worth the time to explore.
The fortress atop the lower city is Carcassonne’s most distinguished feature. The locals often refer to that part of the city as La Cite. There are several free options for transportation between the fortress and lower city. Up in the fortress, there is a distinct medieval theme. Shops in the area tend to sell souvenirs based on that era. It isn’t hard to find food either, as cafes are spread around serving all kinds of things, including a local peasant stew known as cassoullet.
Even though the weather patterns in the area tend to be regularly pleasant, it is still best to go in the spring or fall. During the other seasons, Carcassonne tends to packed with other tourists. Choosing to plan your trip in the “in-between” time of year will most likely yield the most pleasant results. Beating through crowds in never a fun experience!
In terms of activities, there’s plenty to do. Even if you were to spend all your time browsing shops, you’d be hard-pressed to see everything. What a many people like to do is take the guided tours of the ramparts and tower in the upper city. The tour is offered in a multitude of languages too, so your French doesn’t need to be fluent to learn more about La Cite.
Another thing worth doing is renting a car for a day to go out and explore the surrounding areas of Carcassonne. For this reason, there are a few rental car services in the city, so gaining mobility shouldn’t be a hassle. The smaller villages lying around have some interesting things to offer as well, if you take the time to look for them. One of these villages, Limoux, prides itself on its wine collections. This village also hosts the Carcassonne annual Carnivale from January through March.
It’s no wonder why Carcassonne gets over 3 million tourists a year. The unique layout of the city is certainly something amazing to be able to experience firsthand. Going in the early months of the year will give you the opportunity to experience the annual Carnivale, and trying the local soups may be a nice surprise as well. Carcassonne is one of France’s favorite cities, and the opportunity to see why this is for yourself, shouldn’t be passed up.
