Carnac, France
Carnac that is located in France is also called Karnag in the Breton language, and is a commune in the Gulf of Morbihan. It is located in the south coast of Brittany, which is located in the Morbihan department (a department is a form of division in France). It is located to the north west part of France, and its inhabitants are known as Carnacois.
Carnac spreads over an area of about 33 square kilometers, which is about 13 square miles, and has a population of about 5,000 people, which means it has a population density of about 136 people per square kilometers or 350 people per square miles.
Carnac is famous for being the place of the Carnac stone, which is a very famous site that houses about 3,000 standing stones that date to the prehistoric era, and were carved out of the local rock and were erected by the population of that time - which were a pre-Celtic people. The Carnac stones have a local legend associated with them. It is thought that the reason the stones are so straight, even to this day, is that it is due to them actually being the Roman legion, which Merlin (the local version of him) bewitched into stone.
The Carnac stones are known to have been erected during the Neolithic period, meaning in the span of the year 4500 BC to the year 2000 BC. The span of years is so wide, because it is hard to determine exactly how old the stones are, because not a lot of material that can be dated was found beneath the rocks. There is, although, a consensus, that the main phase of the erection of the Carnac stones took place in the year 3300 BC.
It is thought to be a place much like a cemetery, where the next generations went to, and carved and erected a stone in honor of the generations before them and of their ancestors.
Due to the Carnac stone and other points of interest, Carnac has become a tourist attraction after World War 2. Many people rent summer homes in Carnac, and Carnac also attracts people that want a break from the usual tourist spots like Cote d'Azur. The main bulk of tourists arrive between the months of July and August.
Carnac hasn't got warm enough waters for vacationers, but what it lacks in warmth it makes up for in waves, which attract cruise sailors, and the other monuments attract tourists.
If you are a young couple or if you are interested in going out to a night club, you still have a lot of choice. You can go to one of the many bars and clubs that the Carnac-Plage area has to offer, and you can put up a tent in the several camping grounds that are offered for the visitors, which are located in the woods which are surrounding Carnac. You can also find local lakes like the Etand du moulin du lac, and several others, if you are interested.
