The most notable and most famous attraction in Clermont-Ferrand is the 'Puy de Dome’. It can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. The Puy de Dome is a huge extinct volcano mountain that boasts more than 1465 metres in height and towers over the city of Clermont-Ferrand. There are a number of museums in the city which all operate on their own schedules so it is important to look into the hours of operation before heading out to take in the museums. If visiting the Puy de Dome you will be amazed by the sights and sounds that can be seen only from the top of the highest point on the mountain. You will find shops and cafes in the visitors centre. The visitor centres are rich with information about the city's volcanic history and all of the smaller mountains and historic buildings. Near the top of the Puy de Dome you can visit some ancient Roman ruins of The Temple of Mercury as well as a monument built for the 1911 aeroplane pilot who flew over the volcano, Eugene Renaux.
Another popular attraction in Clermont-Ferrand is the Cathedral Notre Dame. Like most of the other historic buildings in France the Cathedral Notre Dame is built with volcanic rock making the building black. It truly is a sight to be seen, several ancient buildings all black from the volcanic stones used to build them. Inside the Cathedral radiates an eerie feeling yet remains an awe inspiring building. Near to the Cathedral Notre Dame is a water fountain built in the same era as the Cathedral, using the very same volcanic rock. The cathedral is walking distance from the Fountaine D'Amboise. There is parking available near the fountain if you have brought a car along. Also near to the fountain are a variety of shops and stores as well as cafes that offer visitors a chance to relax and take in all of the history. You can purchase an array of cheeses, wines, books and toys from the tourist shops.
Clermont-Ferrand enjoys a mild continental climate with 4 seasons including a man made snow in the winter with lows reaching 6 degrees Celsius and rain in the spring and fall. The ski resorts in Clermont are alive with action and vacationers looking for a comfortable place to ski and snowboard without the unpleasantness of freezing conditions. This is not an international airport but transfers at other French international airports can be made and you will arrive 7 kilometres from the city of Clermont-Ferrand in a town called Aulnat.
