Menton, France

Of the various cities and towns you can visit while you are in France you may wish to visit Menton. The town of Menton is situated in the Alpes-Maritimes department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d”Azur region of south-eastern France. As the town is located on the French Riviera it has been given the nickname of being the Pearl of France. In French this nickname is la perle de la France. The town is located almost next to the border of France and Italy.

Even though Menton is a French town you will find that it is more Italian in character than French. The climate of this town is generally milder than what you will find in the rest of the French Riviera. The town has been made largely pedestrianised. This provides visitors to the town the ability to explore the town in relative ease and you will not find any traffic congestions to deal with. All in all this adds some charm of this peaceful resort.

You will also find that Menton is considered to be the Lemon Festival Capital of the World. From this you will find that Menton plays host to the Lemon Festival which takes place here every February. The festival is based on a given theme each year. In times past the festivals themes have included ones like Disney, India, Viva España, Neverland and many others. As the festival lasts a few days you will find you can see and enjoy each new aspect of the festival as in unfurls. You will be able to see the different bands passing through Menton's streets either going by on foot or using truck trailers.

In the centre of town the Casino Gardens will be decorated in the given theme of the festival. However no matter what the theme is you will see a profusion of lemons being used to cover the various exhibits. Likewise any temporary statues have been built for the festival are also covered by this favourite citrus. Along with the Lemon Festival you can see two other festivals taking place here each year. The Menton Classical Musical Festival is held every year in the centre of the old town and the Christmas Festival is also held in the Casino Gardens.

While you are in Menton you will find there are numerous places that you can visit. These will include places like the Jean Cocteau Museum. The museum is located in a bastion near the port. Within this museum you will see displays of drawings, ceramics, tapestries and even a large mosaic by Jean Cocteau who was an artist of renown. Other sights you should visit while you are here will include the perched inland villages of Gorbio and Ste Agnes.

Speaking of work which was done by Jean Cocteau you may want to check out the Salle des Marriages. You will find this civic wedding hall in the Town Hall. It has been decorated completely in murals which have been done by Jean Cocteau.
