Metz, France

In the northeast of France you will be able to visit the city of Metz. This city which is the capital of the Lorraine region can be found near the meeting point of the Seille and Moselle Rivers. In the early days of the duchy of Lorraine, the city of Nancy was considered to be the capital of the region, however during the 20th century Metz was chosen to be the new capital of the Lorraine region.

While the city of Metz is steeped in ancient history you will find that it is a modern city which embraces its history as a way of keeping the grandeur of these times alive for its future descendents. For the visitor to this city you will find there are many interesting places that you may wish to visit. Of these you may be interested in seeing the ruins of the city walls which were built to defend and fortify the city. Another aspect to these fortifications you will see while you are in Metz is that of the city gates.

Of these various gates you will be able to look at the ones which have survived to this day. These gates are known as the Porte des Allemands or the German Gate and the Porte Serpenoise. Besides looking at the way the city of Metz was able to defend itself in the olden days you will find there are a number of churches which can be seen dotting the landscape. Some of these religious buildings that you will be able to find here in Metz are the St-Pierre-de-la-Citadelle church, the St-Clément church, the St-Martin church, and the Ste-Ségolène church which was built during the 13th and 14th centuries.

Another great sight you will find well worth your time in Metz looking at is that of the Centre Pompidou. The Centre Pompidou is a museum of contemporary and modern art. Within this museum you will be able to look at number of different works of art which belong to these genres. When this museum opens in May 2010 you will see many different exhibits of graphic art, sculptures and paintings from both the contemporary and modern painters. Some of the works of art that you will have the chance of looking at are the Le Violon d'Ingres which is a photographic work by Many Ray. Another interesting exhibit you can see will be the La Femme à la guitare by George Braque.

Once you have finished looking at these various exhibits you may want to relax out in the parks and public gardens of Metz. Of these you will find a visit to the Jardin botanique de Metz a great place to relax as well as seeing the different plants which grow here. Here you will be able to see 80 different varieties of roses, a stand of hardy bamboo, and numerous winding paths you can take to absorb the numerous plant species which will compete for your attention.
