Perpignan, France
France is a country that has some amazing history attached to its every city and town. Of these various places that you can choose to visit you will find the town of Perpignan to be a great place to stay and explore to your heart’s content. The town is located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of which it is also the capital. Historically this intriguing town was also the capital of the former province and county if Roussillon. During the 13th and 14th centuries the town of Perpignan was the continental capital of the Kingdom of Majorca.
The town of Perpignan is one which has a rich history. This is evident in the origins of the town. While historical evidence finds traces of human settlements in the area from Roman times itself, the modern beginnings of the town can be traced back to the 10th century. It was not long after its present founding that Perpignan was declared as the capital of Roussillon. As time passed the town changed ruling hands and the evolution of the town continued unbroken. Today you will find evidence of these changes in the buildings and monuments which can be seen in this town.
Of these various sights that you can visit while you are in Perpignan the first one to choose from maybe the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. This construction of this cathedral was begun in 1324 and it was completed only in 1509. The cathedral belongs to the Roman Catholic denomination and it is a national monument in France. The cathedral used to be the seat of the Bishop of Elne, and then from 1602 it became the seat of the Bishop of Perpignan.
Another place that you will be able to see while you are in Perpignan is that of the Palace of the Kings of Majorca. This palace was built in the 13th century and it is situated on the hill which is known as Puig de rey. This hill is located in the southern direction of the town. It was built on the orders of King James II of Majorca. The Palace of the Kings was built after Perpignan was made the capital city of the Kingdom of Majorca. The architects who were employed for the purpose of building this palace were Ramón Pau, Pons Descoll and Bernat Quer. The construction of this palace was completed in 1309.
In the 17th century this palace was renovated under the orders of Louis XIV. The architect who was commissioned with this task is that of the king’s military engineer Vauban. The reinforced walls of this citadel stood standing around the city until 1904 when they were demolished to make way for urban development. These are just a few of the many sights that you will discover while you are visiting Perpignan.
