Rennes, France
Located east of Brittany, Rennes is the capital of the Bretagne Region of France. Situated on a hill, with one side of the city higher in elevation than the other and located at the confluence of two rivers, the Ill and Vilaine, gives Rennes its beauty and appeal. Its nightlife and culture make it a wonderful tourist destination.
Tourist will notice the culture of Rennes right off when they stop by the tourist information centre which is housed in the disused church Chapell St Yves. This architectural masterpiece shows off the style of the times.
The architectural prowess of the city continues on into the 17th century Parliament de Bretagne. This building suffered a terrible fire in 1994, and was rebuilt. The building is still in use and houses the Rennes Court of Appeals.
As you tour the city you will notice beautiful houses lining streets such as Saint Sauveur, Saint George and de Saint-Malo. These historic houses are called timber frame houses. These timber frame houses were originally built in medieval times and many are still in use today. These timber frame houses have beautiful latticework and chevrons broken up by tall windows. Many of these beautiful houses were destroyed in the 1720 fires.
Continuing your exploration of the city you will also notice earth houses. Many of these houses were built in the sixteenth century. These became popular as rural houses began to become more common. Their unique mixture of earth and straw made the houses surprisingly hydrothermic and insulated from sound extremely well. Some of the openings (windows and doors) were supported by stone but more commonly wood was used.
Those interested in religious relics will be pleased to see a number of historic churches are still in existence. One of these beautiful structures is the Saint Peirre Cathedral. This cathedral has architectural styles superimposed on it, making it one of the most interesting buildings in Rennes. Interestingly enough the façade bears the emblem of the Sun King yet still have a fifteenth century guilded alter inside.
Other than the architectural prowess found within the city walls, Rennes is also known for its various festivals. One such festival is held during the first ten days of July. The Festival des Tombeeds de la Nuit fills the city with music, mime, film, poetry and theatre. The entire city, and many tourists turn out to celebrate the Breton culture.
Another good festival to attend is Les Transmusicales. This festival takes place the first weekend of December and is an outlet for up and coming rock and contemporary music bands.
Those interested in the night life can visit one of Rennes many bars and enjoy live music. You do need to unwind after a long day of visiting the cultural centre of the town.
Rennes has its beauty and history, any tourist can find something to enjoy in this lovely French town.
