Saint Malo, France
The favoured destination in St-Malo France is the Citadel of St-Malo. This section of the island was once attached to the mainland by a long causeway, but since then the coastline has been hidden by the newly built harbour basin. This area is popular with tourists because of its streets lined with fully restored 17th and 18th Century homes which are easily manoeuvred in the summer on foot. Be prepared for large groups and crowded streets however.
Because of the small size of the island the buildings are often built narrow but very tall to better maximize the surface area with which they can build. After the German invasion the entire area was rebuilt to its original condition, so the buildings may look very very old but they are in fact safe and fairly new.
The history of this city is more amazing than that of most cities in the way that this city was originally a Fortress built and fortified to protect the mainland from attack by any number of invading groups. In this present day, it's just a sleepy town with a calm and welcoming demeanour.
Taking a guided tour of the city will allow you to not only see all of the wonders hidden within, but to truly understand the history behind the city, why it was built, whether it was successful, and why it was rebuilt later. The clean clear water beaches right on the edge of town are fantastic, no long walk or ride to find a beach. The water is clean and the sun is warm in the summer time. The climate in St-Malo is fairly steady staying between 3 and 20 degrees all year round. For many people St-Malo is a favourite destination around Christmas and New Year. Further north you will find slightly harsher climates.
The restaurants in St-Malo are reported to be a little bit more expensive than other destinations but are reported to be well worth every penny. The shopping is reported to be interesting as well, the quaint little shops and friendly 'everyone is your neighbour' attitude of the locals is quite refreshing.
While in St-Malo a visit to Chausey will be worth your time for sure. This Island can be reached only during the summer months by boat, in the winter months the waters are too shallow to get the boats through the canal. On Chausey you will see the castle built by the Renault car manufacturer. There are shops and cafes on the island but they are usually pretty busy and expensive, you might want to pack a lunch with you for your walk through the small Island. If you do have lunch in one of the restaurants be sure to try the famous Chausey sea food, you will not be disappointed.
St-Malo is a great vacation destination for adults and children alike, this is a very family friendly destination. Rich in history and in culture, there is something for everyone. Bring your kids along, or go just you and your spouse, either way you will always have a good time at St-Malo.
