Everyone loves going on vacation, and a place like Aachen in Germany is one of the nicer places that you can go to. This city lies in the North Rhine Westphalia region, and is the western most city in Germany. Historically Aachen was the city where the kings of Germany were coroneted. Since Charlemagne loved coming to this city during the winter season it was given the title of being his winter capital.
As you wander around the city of Aachen you will be able to look at many of the sights in this place. Amongst these you can visit the Aachen Cathedral. This cathedral is considered as being famous due to its occidental architecture. The core of the chapel was built during the 800’s. The Gothic Choir which is also known as the “Aachen glasshouse” was constructed during the 14th and 15th century. Additionally the southern and northern chapels were also built during this time period. Other additions to the cathedral were added as time passed and the need arose.
The Aachen Cathedral is the burial and memorial place of Charlemagne. 30 kings and 12 queens were anointed, crowned and enthroned in this cathedral during the time period of 936 to 1531. Historically this cathedral was considered as a holy pilgrimage point. During the middle Ages pilgrims visited this city along with those of Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago de Compostela. Today you can still find pilgrims visiting this cathedral as part of a holy pilgrimage.
Another sight you should visit is that of the Elisenbrunnen. This place is considered to be one of the most famous sights in the city of Aachen. The neoclassical hall covers one of the city’s most famous fountains. This hall can be located just a few minutes walk away from the cathedral.
In 1978 this cathedral was declared as part of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The bronze railings, classical pillars, glass works and golden masterpieces give this cathedral an atmosphere which invites the visitor to come back time and time again.
Having visited this cathedral you may like to see the Grashaus. This is a later medieval house which is located at the Markt. The Grashaus is one of the oldest buildings in Aachen which is not of a religious nature. In earlier days this building was the city hall, although now it is the location of the city archives. You can find the Grashaus and the Markt in the downtown area of Aachen.
While you visit this site you should also mark down the Rathaus as a place to see. This 14th century place incorporates two towers from the palace to give it an imposing air. The building has a façade which is quite detailed with figures of fifty Roman Emperors. Within the Rathaus you will see the Kaisersaal. This repository which has been restored many times holds the reproduction crown jewels of this city. The original crown jewels are now permanently housed in Vienna (since the 19th century).
