Bad Reichenhall, Germany
Bad Reichenhall that is in Germany is considered a spa town, which means a town that is located around a mineral spa, which is used to cure people using hot and cold water and hydrotherapy as well as other methods. The term spa town came from the Belgian town, Spa.
Bad Reichenhall is an administrative center of the Berchtesgadener Land district which is a district in Upper Bavaria, and borders with Austria and with the Traunstein district, and is part of dozens of districts in Germany.
Upper Bavaria is called Oberbayern in German and is one of seven administrative regions in the Bavaria area, and is to the south of Bavaria, near the city Munich, and is divided into four more areas.
Bad Reichenhall is situated near Salzburg and is in a valley that is surrounded by mountains (the Chiemagauer Alps), and also serves as a place for salt production due to its brine ponds.
Bad Reichenhall has an area of about 40 square kilometers which is about 16 square miles, and is about 473 meters above sea level (1552 feet) and has a population of about 19,000 people, which means it has a population density of about 465 people per square kilometer (1205 people per square miles).
The area of Bad Reichenhall was populated as early as 2000 BC by a group from the Bronze Age. They were separated tribes of the Glockenbecher culture, but by 450 BC the La Tene culture dominated the area and salt production started.
Bad Reichenhall was eventually made part of the Roman empire, in 15 BC, and it lasted up to 480 AD.
Bad Reichenhall became a tourist resort and a spa town only in the beginning of the 19th century, and has been one ever since.
If you plan on visiting Bad Reichenhall and learning about its culture and history, you might want to visit the St. Zeno monastery which was built way back in 1136 AD. Sadly two thirds of the city's buildings didn't survive due to a fire that occurred during the year of 1834, and it was bombed in 1945 leading to more destruction of buildings and property.
Bad Reichenhall also boasts being the birth place or living quarters to many famous people. Those people include Hans Sollner which is a singer and songwriter, Stefan Holzner who is a triathlon athlete, Michael Neumayer who is a ski jumper that was born in 1979 and began competing in the year 2001. Michael Neumayer won a silver medal in the Team Normal Hill in the 2005 event of FIS Nordic World Ski Championship that took place in Oberstdorf, and also won the bronze medal in he 2006 Men's Ski Flying - Team event.
Other residents of Bad Reichenhall include Regina Hausl who is an alpine skier and started for the Ski-Klub Bad Reichenhall, Anni Friesinger who is a speed skater, who now lives in Salzburg, and George Nickaes and Barbara Gruber who are both ski mountaineers.
