Bielefeld, Germany
Of the many cities that you will find in Germany you may want to come and see Bielefeld. This city is located in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region. Bielefeld which is an independent city is situated below a pass which separated the northern and southern parts of the Teutonburg Forest. The centre of the city can be found on the eastern side of the forest but as a whole you will see the city is extended towards the hilltops nearby as well.
The city of Bielefeld was founded in 1214 by the Count Hermann 4th of Ravensburg in order to guard a pass which crossed the forest. During its early days the city was a minor member of the Hanseatic League and it was referred to as the City of Linen. Today this city brings you a place which is rich in history and exciting places to visit. As there are many of these sights you may like to first visit the Old City Hall – in German it is known as Altes Rathaus – which still serves Bielefeld with the same services it was designed for.
This Old City Hall was built in 1904 and you will see various architectural styles such as Renaissance and Gothic styles on the façade of the Hall. In addition to serving the community without fail you will find that Bielefeld’s mayor holds his office here even though the rest of the city’s administration is housed in the New City Hall which is just next door.
Most sightseers will tell you that religious buildings besides being lovely to visit have a wealth of historical information about the country or city they are in to tell you about. Since this is the case you may like to see about visiting the largest church in Bielefeld. This is the Neustädter Marienkirche. This church is a Gothic hall church which was begun in 1293 and its construction was completed in 1512.
Of the many churches that you will see in Bielefeld the Neustädter Marienkirche is considered from a point of history to be extremely important as it was the starting point of the Protestant Reformation in the city which took place in 1553. As you look at this church you will see that the spires of the church look different than the rest of the church. This is due to the fact that these spires were replaced with two unusually shaped Gothic clock towers since the original towers were destroyed in World War II.
Within the church you will find the Marienalter which is a valuable wing alter which has 13 pictures which can be seen. The altarpiece you will see in the church dates from the 1400s and it is among the most important masterpieces of German Middle Age artwork to be seen. The other valuable works of art from this church are The Flagellation and The Crucifixion. Today you can see both of these in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
