Germany is a country with many attractions in its different cities which are bound to entice visitors of all kinds. Of the various cities found here you will find that Bremen is full of interesting things to see and do.
Bremen is the second most populated city in North Germany, and tenth in the whole of Germany itself. For most of its history Bremen was an independent city state. This has given the city a history which spans a period of some 1200 years giving it a rich cultural heritage which it still celebrates today. The many different monuments and sights found here are a testament to the city’s history, and gives any visitor to Bremen many delightful places to explore.
You will find a statue of the protector of trade, the Knight Roland, with the sword of justice in one hand and a shield in the other standing heroically to the west side of the Town Hall in the Altmarkt, (the old market). Although there are many such statues of Roland dotting the European landscape, this statue in Bremen is thought of as being a particularly fine figure and is consequently to be found on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Another of Bremen’s little gems to be included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List is the Rathaus (the Town Hall). Built in the fifteenth century (1410 to be exact) this building is a fabulous work of architecture and is something that must be seen. If you are interested, tours of the interior are also conducted and can yield a deeper glimpse into the Rathaus.
To see some examples of houses from the 17th and 18th century you need look no further than Schnoor. This area is well preserved and you will see crooked streets, as well as fisherman’s houses here. The world’s smallest hotel is also to be found in Schnoor. A walk through the winding streets has the ability to both charm you and disorient you at the same time as it can become a little confusing to navigate the streets without a map.
The Ratskeller, is a restaurant which is home to some truly enormous wine barrels. The wine list from this restaurant boasts of more than 600 wines most of which are exclusively German wines. The Ratskeller restaurant in Bremen is also the home of the twelve oldest wines in the world. These are still stored in their original barrels in the Apostel chamber of the restaurant.
No visit to Germany would be complete without tasting one of the famous German beers and this can be accomplished by either visiting one of the many pubs that Bremen offers, or by taking a tour of the Beck’s Beer brewery.
The Cathedral of St Peter, better known as the Dom St Petri, can be found in Bremen’s main square and is over 1200 years old. Just as with most of the old buildings in Bremen, the architecture of this Cathedral is particularly fine, and a little exploration of the interior will reveal equally fine paintings on the ceilings. For a small fee you can climb the South Tower of the cathedral and have a bird’s eye view of Bremen.
With so much to see and do it will be no wonder if you miss out on some of the really good sites which haven’t been listed in the guidebooks. The best way to get most of Bremen in at a single sitting would be to take a walking tour through the city. However, you can be guaranteed that no matter how many times you go around the city there will always be another little gem waiting to be discovered just around the corner. The only way in which to solve your dilemma then, is to come back to Bremen again and again until you have satisfied yourself that there truly is no more to see.
