Cochem, Germany
Cochem, Germany is located on the Mosel river, and is known for its exceptional beauty and scenery. This charming town in Germany is ideal for the perfect getaway and is a delightful little gem to explore.
There are many things to see and do while you are in this little town, but planning ahead will give you ample time to visit most of the destinations on your travel itinerary.
When you are planning this however just be sure to fit in time to relax and take in the laid back atmosphere of Cochem. You will not be disappointed if you do. The weight of the world will fall away from your shoulders and you will find yourself transported back to a time when life was slower paced, and where everyone had the time to stop and smell the roses. Or in the case of Cochem, stop and smell the wine bouquets! That’s right, Cochem is also known as wine country and there are many vineyards you can visit, from larger ones to the smaller family run vineyards.
The climate in Cochem is also something to marvel at. Due to its unique situation in a valley, the weather tends towards the warm and sunny for three quarters of the year, making it a great place to visit at just about any time of the year.
If you want to find something to do outside of Cochem proper, you will find that the town is surrounded by charming villages with boundless hospitality, and steep craggy mountainside, which all adds to the endless beauty of the place.
However, beauty is not all there is to see when in Cochem. There is much to do and you might find yourself hard pressed to do everything in the short time you spend there.
To begin with however, you might want to familiarize yourself with the town itself and this can be accomplished by taking a stroll through the various streets of Cochem. There is much to see even if you don’t actually go into any of the places, as the old time charm of the town with its winding streets, fine building facades and picturesque cottages will hold you in thrall.
If you want to visit the Schloss Reichsburg (Castle Cochem) or the upper part of the city however, you will find that the climb there is quite steep. You might want to discard the idea of walking and hop on one of the many buses going that way. Or if you like you can always rent a bike and cycle round Cochem and up to Schloss Reichsburg.
When you are through with that you might want to take a look around one of the many wineries dotted around Cochem and get in on a few wine tastings. For another taste of history, you might want to make your way across to the Senfmühle, a historical mustard mill and one of the last such mills in Europe still standing, and yes, still producing gourmet mustard blends.
As you can see, if you can only make a weekend getaway, you had better plan ahead to make the most of your time. However, don’t be surprised if you come away from Cochem having lost your heart to the excellent scenery and the exceptional charm of this town (not to mention the wines). In fact, you might find yourself making plans for a second visit to Cochem even before you know it!
