Erfurt, City of Flowers, is located near the geographical center of Germany and lies in the wide valley formed by the River Gera. The beauty and the attraction of Erfurt are many and it justifies the city transforming from the old capital of Thuringia to one of the most attractive cities in Germany

The inhabitants of Erfurt number in the hundreds of thousands, and truly it has to be said that the Erfurt’s peoples are its greatest treasures as they reflect the traditions and culture of Erfurt through the ages. The city is also well known for its gastronomic culture, (which is found mainly in its pedestrian zone).

The city of Erfurt gives the impression of old world charm with its narrow winding lanes, many churches and half-timbered houses. Above all this is the Dom, one of the most famous centers of attractions in Erfurt.

There are many churches to be found in the heart of Erfurt, and two of the more well known churches are the Church of Mariendom and the Church of Severikirche. These two churches stand side by side and are a sort of the emblem for the city.

For the educational minded, there are two world renowned universities found in the city of Erfurt itself. The University of Applied Sciences Erfurt and University of Erfurt. These are the prime choice universities for students from all over, and they are also prime tourist locations as there are old buildings here dating back to the time of the Second World War.

The EGA a park in Erfurt is one of the most beautiful places in Germany, and is something that should be seen. It has a garden with a big playground as well as halls for the exhibitions which are normally held there.

Another must see when in Erfurt is the Kramerbrucke Bridge. This bridge should be another must see on your list as it is covered with a grand total of 32 buildings on either side of the bridge. What is so remarkable about it, is that that river it spans is narrow, and more importantly, the bridge was built in 1325. It also had two churches on both sides, although now, only one is left standing the Augustinerkloster.

For a taste of something different, you might want to try Erfurt’s fish market, the Zum Breiten Herd. It is a well known fish market and very unique – quite different really from the ones you might see in your own home town

If you have a bit of time to spare then the Wartburg castle is one of the famous places in the city that you should make the effort to visit. It is a 45 minute ride away from the main city of Erfurt and is notable because Martin Luther translated the bible here in the fifteen hundreds.
