Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a German city with a rich and unique history. Originally Garmisch and Partenkirchen two separate German cities until it was forced to merge together in 1935 in anticipation of the 1936 Winter Olympic games, and as a result each section of the city continues to maintain a fairly separate identity.
If you are interested in vacationing in a city with amazing ancient architecture Garmisch-Partenkirchen might be the perfect spot for your next trip. While in the city you might like to visit the Alte Kirche, or Old Church, originally believed to be an ancient Pagan temple, but later used as a Storehouse, armory, and haybarn; which has been reconstructed recently but still boasts to show some of the original medieval Frescoes. This is a truly unique specimen of ancient architecture which is sure to please the history lover in your life. Also the King's House on Schachen, might be of interest, it was built for Ludwig II of Bavaria, it's grounds contain a luscious botanical garden for the nature lover.
The city is home to a number of unique museums including the Richard Strauss museum which echo’s the life and accomplishments of the world famous musician who was born there; the Aschenbrenner Museum which contains a collection of French and German dolls that date back to the 19th Century, as well as a unique collection of nativity scene pieces.
If you are more interested in an active vacation spot with outdoor winter sports Garmisch-Partenkirchen boasts some of the most prized ski and snowboarding hills in all of Germany. The climate in Garmisch-Partenkirchen fluctuates through the year with July and August being the warmest months averaging about 15.6 degree celsius, and January and December being the coolest averaging -6 to -7 degree celsius.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also world renowned for its status as a health spa town or Climatotherapeutic training center. The trainers in the city have designed a program consisting of excercise, and total body management which is proven to prevent illness, and improving physical body and spirit stronger and healthier. All around Garmisch-Partenkirchen you will find the local residents often dressed in traditional clothes including "Dirndl" for women and "Lederhosen" for men.
