Kiel, Germany

Located within the Northern corners of Germany, Kiel is a thriving, extremely prosperous and affluent town that has enjoyed a remarkably high standard of living both in comparison to the rest of Germany and indeed, the entire European Community. Part of the reason for the extraordinary success of the city of Kiel is down to a very ordinary reason: it is ideally located near the sea meaning that the maritime industry has thrived there.

Sailing and the maritime industries are both represented in their various guises within the city of Kiel, both on a commercial and hobbyist level and it has traditionally remained the envy of the rest of Germany due to its extremely high ship building capabilities. To see a few examples of this you may want to visit the docks where the German Baltic fleet stays during the times they are not at sea. Here you will German Battle ships, various training ships including that of the Gorch Fock, and lots of submarines.

If looking at these ships of the sea is not what you are looking for as part of your holiday in Kiel, then you might like to see St Nicholas’ Church. This 13th century Nikolaikiche is the oldest building in Kiel. You can look at the sculpture of Ernst Barlach which is in front of the church. The sculpture is called Der Geistkämpfer. Another place to go while you are in the city is that of the Rathaus or Town Hall. This town hall was built in 1911 and has an operating paternoster. The tower of this building was designed from a model of a Venetian tower in Italy.

Should you tire of the town, (although given how much there is to see and do, this is a most unlikely occurrence!) there are a number of budget priced passenger cruise ships which can ferry the intrepid explorer, for an extremely reasonable price to nearby countries. Sweden, Norway, even Russia and further afield are all readily accessible from the ports of Kiel allowing for a globe trotting tourist to make their Euro-trip even easier.

Another feather in the well stuffed cap of Kiel is that due to the strong representation of the sailing and maritime industries, the sailing aspects of the Olympic Games were hosted here.

Like many other German cities during the Second World War, Kiel endured a significant amount of damage from Allied bombers, although it should be noted that Kiel was actually a victim of its own success by virtue of the fact that it played such an important strategic role in the production of U-boats. After the war had ended, the city underwent a significant period of renovation and recovery in a bid to bring the city to its once glorious status. This means that the city has a charming combination of both antiquated and modern architecture which live together side by side.

If you are keen to see the original architecture, then your best bet is to wander around the residential sectors and suburbs as these were not too badly damaged during the bombing campaigns due to the fact that the Allies wanted to focus their firepower solely on the naval production capabilities of the town above all else.

Whether it is to enjoy the scenery, fresh sea air, or enjoy the sporting activities Kiel is the place to be. You will find that you have many things that you can enjoy while you are here. Therefore for your next vacation make Kiel the place to be in.
