If you are planning a vacation you might want to see what the city of Leipzig has to offer. This industrial city in Germany is found in the federal state of Saxony. It is the state’s largest city and it boasts of numerous sights, shopping, dining and cultural places to visit. Activities such as shopping and dining are both easy to accomplish in Leipzig, and you will find many stores that can provide you with all that you need. These include a fresh food market which can be found near the Leipzig Central Stadium, and open on Saturday’s.
One of the sights you must see when in Leipzig is the Botanical Gardens of Leipzig. This garden is one of the oldest in Germany, and is supposed to be one of the first such gardens in the world. You will also enjoy visiting the Leipzig Zoo which is one of Germany’s best known zoo’s besides also being one of its largest.
Another appealing attraction to the thirsty tourist is Auerbach's Keller, a pub that has been around since medieval times (since 1525 to be exact). You can kill two birds with one stone when you visit this pub as it is a great way to relax, and also a must on your sightseeing list.
It is one of the longest continuously running pubs to be found in Germany. This is also the place where one of the world’s most renowned works of literature “Faust” was written, by one of the world’s most renowned poets, Goethe. Although it can be somewhat expensive, the play is re-enacted from time to time in the pub and can be a fine way to round off your trip to Leipzig.
If you are in Leipzig during the winter months – specifically in December – you should try to visit the Christmas Market where you can taste such strange things as Gluewein. This is a heated wine that has been spiced and is really quite delicious. You can also celebrate the Christmas season with the many people sharing the market with you and even listen to the harmonious sounds of carolers.
If you like classical music, and even if you don’t, it can be a fascinating thing to take a tour through the Bach Museum which is also coincidentally enough a church. This is the same church in which Bach himself worked for most of his life, the St Thomas Church (or Thomaskirche),. Bach was also buried in this church and his grave is to be found in the floor of the altar.
Bach is not the only composer to have lived in Leipzig. The likes of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Schiller have all graced the streets of Leipzig and there is much to see in each of the “Houses” dedicated to these great composers. In fact, the world famous Gewandhaus – Mendelssohn’s concert hall – is still active today and many people come from far and wide to see the performances.
With much to see and do while you are in Leipzig it can be very easy to miss out on some of the smaller sights to be found tucked away in nooks, or just around little corners. The best thing to do is to grab your guidebook, find yourself a seat in one of Leipzig’s many charming café’s and plan your route so that you can see the most amount of things in the limited time you have on your hands. Don’t forget to schedule a little time to relax in one of Leipzig’s pubs or café’s after doing a hard day’s sightseeing!
