Mainz, Germany

Mainz is a city in Germany and a capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate and was a politically important seat of the Prince-elector of Mainz under the Holy Roman Empire. Mainz is located on the west bank of the river Rhine and is easily reachable from the Frankfurt international airport by the commuter railways.

The climate experienced by the city of Mainz is oceanic, with the temperatures being cold in winters and warm and pleasant during the spring and summer months. So Mainz would be an optimal vacation spot for visits in the summertime, as warmer weather makes outdoor excursions even more enjoyable.

Mainz was originally designed to be "The capital of our dear fatherland" by Goethe. Unfortunately it never got the position it was styled for. Long before Goethe decided that Mainz should be the capital of the Fatherland it was initially a Roman fort city. Today while there are no Romans found here you can look at these places in the city.

This church is known locally as Mainzer Dom. It is over 1,000 years old. Today besides being a functioning church, the Mainz Cathedral is the official home of the Bishop of Germany. Inside the cathedral you will also find many religious works of art which span the centuries.

Speaking of churches you may like to visit the Rococo churches of St. Augustin and St. Peter. St. Augustin’s church in Mainz is commonly known as the Augustinerkirche, while St. Peter’s is more commonly known as the Petruskirche. Each of these churches display beautiful gilded art on the ceilings and the walls. The time of construction for both of these buildings can be placed around the 18th century.

For lovers of history you can look at some Roman remains near the city of Mainz. These ruins will include Jupiter's column. As you look at these various ruins you will begin to get an idea of how the Romans regarded this city. Of course the past can be found not just with the Romans but in a somewhat more modern setting. This modern artifact you should visit is that of the Iron Tower or Eisenturm. This tower can be found at the former iron market in Mainz.

Mainz had been a wine growing region since Roman times, and the image of Mainz being as wine town is fostered by the tourist center.
