Mannheim, Germany

Of the various cities you can find in Germany you will be able to visit the city of Mannheim. This city can be found in the Baden-Württemberg state. Mannheim is situated at the junction of the Neckar and Rhine Rivers. The Rhine separates the city from the neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate city of Ludwigshafen. To the north of the city you will find the Hessian border.

Unlike other cities in Germany you will find that Mannheim has been planned along a grid pattern called Quadrate in a fashion which is similar to many North American cities. For this reason the city has been given the nickname Quadratestadt. In German this means the “town of the squares”. As you explore this city you will discover that Mannheim’s main route leads you to a large 18th century palace. This palace used to be the seat of the Electors of the Palatinate. Today you will find that it is now the home of the University of Mannheim.

Before you start exploring this city you may like to know a few trivia aspects about Mannheim. For instance Julius Hatry built the world's first rocket plane here in Mannheim in 1929. The Lanz Bulldog which is a popular tractor with a rugged, simple Diesel engine was introduced to the world in 1921 from Mannheim. And the highly popular and well known Benz car made its first appearance in the city as well. In 1886 from the workshop of Karl Benz a lightweight three-wheeled car which was powered by a single cylinder fuelled engine was first seen in public.

Of the various places that you can visit while you are in Mannheim you will find the Water tower to be a good place to visit. This water tower is one of the city’s famous icons. The water tower has been built utilising the Art-Nouveau style which in German is known as Jugendstil. You will find that besides looking at the water tower this is an ideal spot to relax and have a picnic on the small park which surrounds the water tower. Near the park you will see the Rosengarten. This is a conference hall which is made from reddish colored bricks. When you see this building on a sunny day the bricks will stand out amazingly.

Another good place for you to visit while you are in Mannheim is that of the Mannheim palace. This palace was built in the 1700s and today it is part of the University of Mannheim. As you admire the architecture of the palace you can see why it draws the attention of so many visitors to Mannheim. However the palace in not the only sight you will find when you come to Mannheim. Here you should visit the Luisenpark which is said to be one of the most beautiful parks in Germany. You will find that Luisenpark is situated right next to the Neckar River. In the park you will see a greenhouse and boat rides. There are also numerous activities in the park to keep children entertained.
