Munich, Germany
Munich is situated on the River Isar in the north of Bavaria Alps the capital city of Bavaria, Germany the third largest city after Berlin and Hamburg. The population of Munich is approximately 1.35 million within city limits and over 5 million people are the residents of Munich Metropolitan Area including the urban areas of Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Rosenheim and Landshut. The name of the city is derived from an Old German language word Mönche, which means "Monks" in English. Munich is located on the lofty plains of Upper Bavaria, nearly 50 km north of the northern rim of the Alps having continental climate sturdily customized by the immediacy of the Alps. Aggressive and surprising rain storms are most often in the region. The scope of temperature between day and night or summer and winter is unpredictable and it could be intensified. The winter season prevails from December to March during this Munich faces quite cold winters. January remains the coldest when snow covers the city for about fifteen days where as the summer in Munich is fairly warm. According to a poll in 2007 the number of total residents in Munich was 1.34 million out of them 300,129 were not German citizens including strong communities of Turkish and Balkans as the leading foreigner groups were Turks, Albanians Croats, Serbs, Greeks, Austrians and Italians.
Life in Munich became very tough due to eruption of World war l in 1914, as the food and fuel access to Germany was denied by the Allied forces which resulted in an acute shortage of the commodities. During French air raids In 1916 Munich was attacked by French Air Force as three bombs were dropped on the city. Munich had to face political instability to a great extent as aftermath of World War I. once again during World War II the city was smacked by 71 air raids over a phase of six years which created heavy damage to the city. Munich was fully reconstructed as a consequence of American takeover in 1945 following a thorough and conventional plan to preserve its pre-war street network.
The number of inhabitants in Munich surpassed the 1 million mark in 1957. Munich served as the host city of summer Olympics in 1972. At the present modern age the mainstream of population in Munich is taking pleasure of an excellent living standard as Mercer rated the city 8th amongst the top 10 in 2007for the achievement to provide premier quality of life to its residents. The Mercer also ranked it as 39th most high-priced city in the world and the most expensive city of Germany to live in. Today because of high status living with safety and security, this city has earned the good name and by the virtue of the low crime rate comparing with other big cities it is known as "Toy town” by English speakers. Munich has got a flourishing economy backed by the biotechnology, information technology and publishing sectors.
The city is rich in historical heritage and extraordinary structural designs since the city was raised from devastated historic buildings through creating new milestones of architecture.
Munich has the honour to have several football teams. The city hockey club is known as EHC Munich. Munich hostedthe1972 summer Olympics and this city was one of the host cities for the 2006 Football cup held in a new football specific stadium the Allianz Arena. Nearby Towns
