Regensburg, Germany

The city of Regensburg can be found between the rivers of the Danube and the Regen. This city is located in the Bavarian region of Germany. As you explore the city you will find that the city center which is medieval in looks has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here you will find many interesting sights and places to explore. Of these various sights you should look at the Stone Bridge. This bridge is also called the Steinerne Brücke or more accurately the Bridge of Stone.

This bridge spans the Danube River. From the bridge you can have a breathtaking view over the city. It was built during the 12th century. The knights from the 2nd and 3rd Crusades used this bridge to cross the Danube on their way to the Holy Lands. At 310m long this stone bridge is an excellent example of medieval architecture and the ingenuity needed to construct this long bridge.

The Dom Cathedral which you can find in the city of Regensburg is one of the main Gothic buildings in the city. Inside of this cathedral you will be able to see historic monuments like Peter Visch’s masterpieces. There are two chapels in this cathedral which are older than the cathedral itself. Another interesting religious building to see would be that of the Church of St. James. This church is also called Schottenkirche. This is a Roman basilica which was built during the 12th century. The name of this basilica comes from the Irish Benedictine’s Monastery.

To see one of the oldest apothecaries in Regensburg you should see the Adler-Apotheke which can be found next to the Regensburg Cathedral. Another historic place to visit is that of Gasthof zum Goldenen Kreuz –the Golden Cross Inn. Here Emperor Charles V met Barbara Blomberg, who was the mother of Don John of Austria. You may enjoy a visit to the Donaupark. This is an extended leisure park where you can enjoy yourself. Here you will find the Regensburg's botanical gardens and an artificial lake. This park is located close to the Danube River.

You should consider visiting the chapel of St. Jakob. This chapel is decorated in Rococo style and is well worth your time visiting this place. You might like to see another church in this city. This is the Regensburg's cathedral which is called Dom St. Peter. This cathedral features an impressive museum. In this museum you will be able to look at precious liturgical instruments and various devices which were used at the time.

With all of these different sites you can find in this city you will see why Regensburg is a gem of a city to visit. Depending on the time of year that you choose to holiday here you can enjoy the atmosphere of this city. As you can see, there are many things to see and do while in Regensburg and you will be spoilt for choice in deciding how you want to spend your vacation.
