The city of Saarbrücken can be found in the country of Germany and it is the capital city of the state of Saarland. You will see that Saarbrücken is located in the heart of a metropolitan area which lies westwards to Dillingen and north-eastwards to Nueunkirchen. In the early days of Saarbrücken’s history the city was an important industrial centre.
Today while the city is not that highly regarded industry wise the many people who come to this city recognize the beauty and the cultural heritage that is Saarbrücken. As you explore this city you will see many interesting sights that you may never have the chance of seeing elsewhere in the world. As with many European cities you can find numerous attractive landmarks to visit in Saarbrücken. Of these you may like to see the stone bridge which runs across the Saar River. This bridge was used to connect the town with the castle which could be seen on the opposite side of the river.
After you have looked at how the bridge frames the river you may want to visit some of the city’s museums. As there is a choice to choose from you might want to think about some aspects of the city you are interested in learning about. For instance if you are interested in knowing some of the early and prehistory of life you should take a look inside of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History. On the other hand if you would like to know how plants and medicine are related you can visit the Medicinal Plant Museum. Besides these museums you have other choices like the Historisches Museum Saar, or the Museum St. Arnual.
From these museums you will find that traveling to the Saarbrücken Castle is also a good idea. Here you will see a baroque style palace. This palace can be found on the left bank of the Saar River. Prior to the current palace it was possible to find a medieval castle and also a Renaissance château here. Today you will find that the castle is being used as the headquarters of the Regional Association Saarbrücken. The vaulted cellar and extension of this cellar serve as the exhibition rooms for the Historical Museum of Saar.
In Saarbrücken you will find there are numerous churches that you can visit. Each of these churches is unique and the history they bring to the city is rich and varied. As there are many of these you may like to know about some of the better known ones. These will include places like St. Ursula which is a Catholic church that was built in 1935 by Jakob Quirin. Then you have the Old Saarbrücken Emergency Church.
This church is Protestant by denomination and it was imported to Saarbrücken from Switzerland. Originally the church was built as a military barracks. However it was converted into a church and then in 1946 it was presented as a gift from the American Lutheran Church. In 2008 the church was completely restored to its former glory.
Today as you roam around Saarbrücken you will see a city which is rich in history and wonderful sights. These places of interest that you will see will linger in your memories and long after you have returned home, you will still have a piece of Saarbrücken with you.
