Wernigerode, Germany

On the German Framework Road, which is a tourist route leading from north to south Germany, you will find Wernigerode, a city located on the north slope of the Harz Mountains. It is also known as “Bunte Stadt am Harz”, which means the colourful city at the Harz. The history of the town dates back to the 9th century which leaves it with interesting historical buildings and sites.

Several Gothic buildings are still located in the city including the town hall, the Gerhart Hauptmann Gymnasium and a number of old houses. The most prominent building is Schloss Wernigerode, a castle which rises above the town, originally built in the 12th century. It was rebuilt in the late 1800’s and still includes parts of the original construction. When it was built its purpose was to make a safe place for the German Emperors on their expeditions.

Throughout the centuries it has been altered, damaged and restored several times and since 1930 parts of the castle have been opened to the general public. Special exhibitions are offered regularly and the permanent collection contains some of the historical furnishing and decoration.

The Harz Mountains are accessible by a narrow gauge railway called the Harzer Schmalpurbahn. It leads from the town to the highest peak in the mountains and then goes south to Nordhausen.

Several museums are located in the city among which are the Harzmuseum Wernigerode, the Smallest House, the Museum of Aviation and Technology, the Windmill Museum and Gallery and the Planetarium Harz Wernigerode. Here you can take a one hour tour and discover what is in the universe. There are special programs available for groups, children, students and families and the fees are amazingly low. A very interesting and educational way of having fun.

The Smallest House is exactly as the name says, the smallest house. The living room is 10 metres square and once, a family with seven children lived here. It is now open to the general public. In another part of town you can find the Crooked House. It was originally a mill pond which became crooked because of the weakened foundations due to floods. The oldest house was built in 1400 and it's one of the few buildings remaining from the great fire in 1847.

“Kleiner Harz” is a unique Miniature Park located in the Citizens Park. Here you can view very detailed miniatures of the most important buildings in the area and parts of the town. It is the quickest way to see how the city is structured and what you have not seen yet on your trip. Other parks you can visit are the Bürgerpark Wernigerode, the “Lustgarten” or Garden of Pleasures, the local zoo and the Deer Park Christianental.

In the city centre you will find over 30 different restaurants serving both traditional and foreign cuisines. If you would like to enjoy a local meal, the Altwernigeröder Kartoffelhaus and the Cake House no. 1 are highly recommended. Also you will find numerous shops to choose from and at night you can visit one of the clubs or bars.

Wernigerode is one of those cities with a rich history and many great sightings to visit, and it welcomes tourists with open arms. (It is recommended to get the Wernigerode Ticket, which will give you discounts on, for example, public transport, souvenir shops and restaurants.)

With great accommodation and other facilities available, not to mention the large number of activities offered, you can have a perfect vacation in one of the most unique cities of Germany.
