Würzburg, Germany

Part of the Franconian Wine Country in Germany is Wurzburg. Wine is a very important part of the culture in this city and throughout the year many wine festivals are organized. All the great flavours will be available and entertainment is organized through the whole city. There are also multiple cellars offering tours throughout the year and if you would like to see where it all starts, you can visit the Würzburger Stein.

The city has a very rich history which makes it a perfect place for interesting hikes and tours. Wurzburg was founded by the Celts and was almost completely destroyed during World War II by a British air raid. The churches and monuments were replicated during the years after, as well as the city centre which dated back to the medieval ages.

One of the must sees is the “Castle above all Castles”, the UNESCO Heritage Site Residence Palace. It is a magnificent piece of architecture based on the design of Balthasar Neumann. The stunning staircase survived the war and is still standing. After visiting the palace you can take a walk at the Hofgarten where you can view sculptures and cast iron gates.

Another highlight is the fortress Marienberg, which towers above the city. From there you have a unique view over the area and the royal gardens which belong to the fortress. Guided tours are available in multiple languages and the fortress itself has a very interesting history.

Other historical sites you can visit are the Alte Mainbrücke (the main bridge), the Dom St. Kilian, the Käppele, the Marienkapelle and the Haus zum Falken next to the Marienkapelle.

Make sure you purchase the Würzburg Welcome Card when visiting; it will give you discounts on many facilities and activities like wine tastings, guided tours, boat trips, restaurants and museum entry fees. Some of the museums you can visit are the Mainfränkisches Museum where you can view the largest collection of works by Riemenschneider, the Museum Georg Schäfer where you can see the most important private collection of art of the 19th century or the Knauf Museum where artwork of ancient Egypt is exhibited.

A very popular activity in the area is cycling. There are many tours available through the surrounding parks and forests. Special trails have been set up and you can rent a bicycle in the city centre. The local golf course is located on a plateau and features an 18-hole course and driving range. It is known as one of the leading courses of Germany. Various hiking trails are available and if you would like to try Nordic walking, which is also very popular in this region, you can get everything you need locally.

For children and families there are a number of great playgrounds located in the city and every winter a special ice skating disco is made where you can skate while dancing to music provided by a live DJ. The entrance fees are very low and it is a wonderful opportunity to have fun while being active with the whole family.

Würzburg is from a historical, cultural and social perspective one of the greatest cities in Germany to visit. When you are looking for an active trip with a good variety in activities and excellent accommodations and facilities for tourists, this city is where you want to be.
