Moraḯtika, Greece

Greece is a country which is inviting for the traveler who wants to relax in a warm climate while at the same time investigating the wonders of the past which can be seen from ruins of buildings from long ago. You will find for this purpose the resort town of Moraitika is the place to be. Here you will be able to relax on the fabulous beach in the mornings while in the afternoons you explore the various sights which can be found hidden in the resort and its surrounding areas.

While sightseeing is one of the best ways to get acquainted with a new place you will find that taking a tour around this resort is one of the best ways to find out the different landmarks and sights you should visit. Of these you will find a visit to the Achillion Palace in Gastouri. This palace was the palace of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria and the last Kaiser. The palace was built on a mountain top which overlooked the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the mountains on the other side.

Even though the palace was built in 1892 it has managed to weather time and the various elements which might have otherwise degraded the beauty of the palace. Next to the palace you will find there is a small museum where you will be able to look at a number of objects which were used by the Empress Elizabeth during her lifetime. In addition to looking at these various objects you will be able to see portraits of the empress and the time that she spent in Corfu. Besides looking stunning palace you can stroll around the palace gardens and admire how the plants of the Mediterranean enhance the looks of this palace.

From sightseeing at the Achillion Palace you will enjoy visiting the village of Pelekas which is not too far from Moraitika. This village which is situated on a hill top will provide you with a fabulous place to relax in. The summit of the hill is an ideal spot for you to watch the sun setting into the evening. Besides being able to look at the sun set you will also find it possible to relax on the sandy beaches which are close to the hill top village. While you are visiting this lovely village you may want to stop at one of the village restaurants and sample some of the delightful traditional foods and beverages.

Whether you are a history buff or not you will find the Archaeological Museum of Moraitika to be quite interesting. Even though the museum is not that big you will find an astonishing wealth of intriguing artifacts and exhibits to look at. These will include the funerary statue of a crouching lion which was taken from the Tomb of Menekrates as well as an interesting looking Archaic sculpture of Medusa. You will also be able to look at artifacts which have been unearthed from archaeological sites in Corfu including ones from the Temple of Artemis which was situated in the ancient capital of Corcyra.

As you explore the various places of interest you will be able to learn not just about the history of this wonderful city but you will also learn about the hospitality of the local inhabitants. When you leave for your home you will be taking a small part of this welcoming culture back home with you as an invitation to come back to Moraitika for another fantastic holiday.
