Plataniás, Greece
On the island of Crete you will find Platanias, which is the busiest village in the Chania region in the summer. This popular area offers anything from relaxation to excitement and is one of the wealthiest areas in the Chania region. The national airport is located only 20 minutes away and many tourists spend their summer here.
It is most famous for its amazing beach and exotic scenery located at Kato Platanias, the lower region of the village. There are many options for water sports available and the beach has been the Blue Flag award from the E.U. for many years. Alongside the beach you can find multiple bars and other facilities. The beach and sea is also the home of many sea turtles. The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece makes sure they can safely stay there and offer educational programs for tourists, children and the locals.
The Municipality of Platanias covers 13 villages among which Gerani, Modi and Manoliopoulo. The village Gerani is one of the quietest in the area and it is located by the sea. Locally it is called 'Palaio Gerani' to distinguish it from the other coastal settlements. The village is well known for its beach and quietness because only a few tourists decide to spend their vacation here.
When you are looking for souvenirs or just want to go out shopping, you can visit the city center of Platanias. From grocery stores to jewelry shops, the village offers a great variety of facilities. One of the shops that is quite remarkable considering the sunny and warm climate is the F.N. Mexa Furs shop where you can buy fur coats made from mink, racoon and other animals. Considering the wealth of the area this shop is well known and it might be worth to pay a visit.
Another activity worth your time is taking the old train through the nature and surroundings of the village. You can choose to make a day trip which is a different tour each day, or you can take a short ride to the Limnoupoli Water Park. It is a cheap and fun way to travel within Platanias and the surrounding area.
At nighttime there are several bars and clubs you can visit. Club Utopia is one of them that really stands out because of its unique interior. The different areas of the club are connected with rope bridges crossing river-like constructions which gives you a feeling of adventure and you can go here for both lounging and an exciting and lively night out. It is one of the clubs you must see when visiting this area.
Of course you will also be able to have an excellent meal at one of restaurants, either in the city center or located at the beach. There are many traditional Greek dishes available and you can get a taste of Raki, a national alcoholic beverage.
This popular area of Crete is the perfect location when you are looking for anything from tanning on the beach to exciting activities or history and culture. Platanias is a fun, lively and relaxing village where you just can't get bored. It does not matter if you are visiting on your own, with friends or as a family, there are facilities and activities available for all ages and interests.
