Győr, Hungary
Gyor is the capital of the Gyor-Moson-Sopron County and is one of the seven most important cities in Hungary. It is located midway between Vienna and Budapest. This ancient town is also home to many historical sites for visitors to view.
The town of Gyor was settled in the fifth century BCE by the Celts and was later made into a diocesan town by King Stephen. Because of its history there are several can’t miss architectural sites.
One of these religious monuments is the Ark of the Covenant monument. Constructed in 1731 this monument is built in the Baroque style. It is located just to the east of the Cathedral and depicts two angels holding the Ark of the Covenant. There is an interesting legend behind it: the legend is that Emperor Charles III had it built as an act of atonement for violation of the Blessed Sacrament.
Another historical monument that should be seen is the Bishop’s Castle. This castle was originally built in the eleventh century by King Stephen. The present remains of the Bishop’s castle is from the fourteenth century and its resident was none other than Bishop Kalman. Tourists can still view the Bishop’s coat-of-arms on the front of the tower and can view the Gothic chapel located nearby. The Castle Museum is home to valuable religious utensils from the fourteenth to the nineteenth centuries.
A final religious site to visit is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. Standing across from the Bishop’s castle is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. This cathedral dates back to the eleventh century. This Romanesque cathedral is a triple aisle building that was rebuild between the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries after it was destroyed by the Mongols. The main alter and the ceiling frescos were designed by Franz Anton Maulbertsch. The frescos were painted between 1772 and 1781. From the center aisle visitors can see The Ascension, while from the northern aisle you can view the Transfiguration of Christ; the southern aisle depicts scenes from St. Stephen’s life.
Another architectural site to see is the Town Hall. It can be found upon entering the town from Road one (north) or Road 83 (west). This Neo-Baroque building is a u-shaped building that was built between 1896 and 1898. One of the main buildings that stand out in this hall is the 190ft (58m) tower that is located on the premises. Not only is the Town Hall a work of art to be admired it is also the location of many concerts and festivals.
The beauty and architectural prowess of the ancient town is something that should not be missed. Gyor Hungary is not just an important economic site for its area but it is also a center for history and beauty. It is a must stop for anyone visiting the Gyor-Moson-Sopron area of Hungary.
