Cork, then the Republic of Ireland is also called Corcaigh which comes from the word corcach - it means "swamp". Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland and its third most populated city. Cork is located in the Cork country and is the largest city in the Munster province.
Cork has a population of close to one million people and is known for its historic role in the Wars of the Roses. The rose wars are a long series of civil wars between dynasties and nobles over control. The main rival houses were the Yorks and the Lancasters who both wanted to control the throne of England.
The actual war took about 30 years to reach a conclusion but smaller fights erupted after it. The Lancasters won the war which led to the Tudor dynasty ruling England for a short period of just 116 years.
Cork was built in the River Lee which flows in and around the city, and offers docks.
Cork has a changeable climate with lots of rain but lacks extreme temperatures despite the abundance of rain. Its climate is considered mild and temperatures are different sometimes between the city and the airport so if you're flying there you need to be prepared.
If you want to tour in the city or you're with your family and you want to enjoy the culture that Cork has to offer you're in luck. Cork has many prominent places of art, including the Cork School of Music and the Crawford College of Art and Design. You can also enjoy a variety of performance from numerous active theatres in the area, like the University College Cork and the Corcadorca Theatre Company.
You can also enjoy the film festival that the city holds each year from October 1st to the 8th. The festival is recognized worldwide and is very important in the short film industry. It started operating in Ireland as early as 1967 and it showcases several hundred movies each year.
While in the city you can enjoy its many restaurants and enjoy the local food traditions and pallets. Some of the traditional foods you can find and enjoy are the crubeens, the tripe and the drisheen.
Besides having a unique cuisine, the area of Cork city and county has a unique accent that is recognized with it.
The city also offers a lot to listen, read and view in the media department, and offers several radio channels and local stations. There's also a campus radio station and a radio station devoted to Christian living.
The city is also known for its high profile pirate stations but those are far and few between nowadays, due to Comreg taking care of the issue.
You might hear radio stations that are of the adjoining counties when you'll drive in Cork, such as the WLR FM and the Kerry radio.
You can also visit Cork to admire its many important buildings and statues.
