Jerusalem, capital and largest city of Israel, is considered to be one of the holiest cities in the world. This ancient city has religious ties to the three major religions in the world today: Judaism, Christianity, and Muslim. Because of its holy status the majority of visitors to Jerusalem are there to visit the variety of religious sites found in the old city and beyond.
The first stop many of the travelers to Jerusalem make is in the old city. This site of the original city is less than 0.35 square miles (0.9 square metres) and was originally built by King David (of Old Testament fame). The old City is surrounded by a wall and is divided into four quarters, each with something unique for visitors.
The Armenian quarter of the Old City, which is the smallest quarter of the Old City, is the home of the St. James Cathedral. This cathedral, built in the twelfth century, is on the site of the original Byzantine church. St. James Cathedral is worth a stop to view, with its centre dome resting on four pillars. This dome allows light in to shine on the paintings on the walls. This church is considered one of the most beautiful churches in all of Israel.
The Muslim Quarter of the Old City, which is also the largest quarter, is home to many of the sacred Islamic religious sites. Among them is the famous Dome of the Rock. This mosque is built on Mount Moria and is easily recognized by its large golden dome that has become a landmark of Jerusalem. The Dome of the Rock is located on the spot where many Muslims believe Mohammad ascended to heaven. The Dome of the Rock is open to visitors of other religions but only Muslim prayers may be said in this sanctuary.
The location of the Dome of the Rock is also sacred to the Jews and Christians as well. Mount Moria, more commonly known as the Temple Mount, was the home of the Second Temple. The Western Wall, or Wailing Wall as it is known, is located within the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. This wall is located on the western flank of the Temple Mount and is a popular stop for religious pilgrims, both Jewish and Christian. It is the only remaining section of the Second Temple that was built on the Temple Mount.
The Christian Quarter of the Old City is home to many of the Christian religious sites. One of these sites is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, or the Church of the Resurrection. Many believe the land that this church is built on to be that of the Hill of Calvary, also known as Golgotha, the hill that Jesus was crucified and died on. The Church is said to also encompass the tomb that he was buried in and holds a portion of the stone that was believed to have covered his tomb. These sites and their historical significance make them a popular stop for Christians and historians interested in the time period.
Jerusalem is full of religious icons for travelers to visit. There are also many museums and shops to visit as well. Visitors of almost any religion can find something of interest to enjoy.
