Bolzano, Italy

Bolzano that is in Italy is known as Bauzanum in Latin and is a city and a comune in the Trentino-Alto Adoge/Sudtirol part of Italy, and is the capital of the Bolzano-Bozen province.

Bolzano boasts being the place of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano where lecturers are available in various languages - German, English and Italian, to show and accommodate the city's multilingual situation, and varied population.
Bolzano also boasts being the location of the Alpini High Command which is part of the Italian army.

Bolzano is spread over about 53 square kilometers (about 21 square miles) and is situated 262 meters above sea level (860 feet), and has a population of about 103,000 people, and a population density of about 2,000 people per square kilometer (about 5,100 people per square mile).

Bolzano was first inhabited by the Raetian Eisack people but was later conquered and settled by the Romans in 15 BC, and was called Pons Drusi which means Drusus bridge. Since then German people started populating the area, turning it into an important trading location. It was close to two major cities back then - Venice and Augsburg and a market was held in Bolzano each year.

Nowadays the city has a medieval style city center and many Gothic and Romanesque style churches, and signs with multiple languages, due to its hodge podge type of population.
Bolzano is a major tourist attraction for both students and vacationers, due to the city's educational facilities and its many historical buildings and structures.
If you are visiting as part of a learning trip, or if you are with your family or friends and you want to visit the city, or even if you are by yourself, you have a lot to see and visit.

Among the tourist attractions that you can visit is the Walther Square which has a statue of Walther von der Vogelweide which is a German minstrel lived around 1100s to the 1200s, and was a poet during the middle age.
You can also walk along the Lauben which is a street that is a mile long in the center of Bolzano, and features medieval arcades and high street shops.

While in Bolzano you can also visit the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology which is the place where the Otzi the Iceman mummy is featured. That mummy is a mummy from around 3300 BC who is thought to have lived north to what is now Bolzano, and is the oldest natural mummy of a European man.
The mummy was found in 1991.

While in Bolzano you can also visit the many castles in the area which include the famous Runkelstein Castle which is located in Ritten near Bolzano, and was built during 1237.

Other castles of interest are the famous Castle Maretsch and the Castle Firmian which is also known as Castle Sigmundskron.

There are also old parishes, churches and monasteries in the area, such as Muri-Gries and others.
