In the province of Naples you will find the municipality of Casamicciola Terme. The town of Casamicciola Terme can be found in the Campania region about 30 kilometers southwest of Naples. There are about five municipalities which border Casamicciola Terme. These municipalities are known as Serrara Fontana, Forio, Lacco Ameno, Barano d”Ischia and Ischia.
You will find there are plenty of things to do and see while you are in Casamicciola Terme. This breathtaking municipality is famous for its various spas and their curative waters. However in addition to these spas you can visit places like the Piazza Bagni.
Here in this shady square found in the nearby hills you will find numerous excellent spas. These spas get their wonderful curative powers thanks to the nearby hot spring of Gurgitello. The hotel Manzi is the best place to see the tub where Giuseppe Garibaldi took his treatments. You may also see a small chapel which is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi if you travel via Ombrasco.
From the Piazza Bagni you may want to visit the Piazza Marina. This square which is located opposite the port has been recently closed to car traffic. The piazza is the economic and social centre of Casamicciola Terme. It is a meeting point for locals and tourists alike. While you are here you can gain an idea about the history of the region by looking at some of the landmarks found there. These will include a statue of King Victor Emanuel II, a plaque to the Norwegian poet Henrik Ibsen who wrote parts of his masterpiece Peer Gynt in this area of Casamicciola Terme and you will also see a Monument to the Fallen.
After you have regaled yourself with the sights and some delicious refreshments in the Piazza Marina you might like to visit the Church of Santa Maria della Pieta. This Casamicciola Terme church was built in the late 19th Century. As you enter the church you will find that it contains numerous interesting works of art. These range from the high altar which was made for the church in the 17th Century, and above this high alter you will be able to see an important canvas which was done by Vaccare. The canvas depicts the seven sufferings of the Virgin Mary. In addition to looking at this beautiful canvas you may like to see the Statues of Saints and of Mary in the sacristy.
From the old to the new sights you will find the Geophysics Observatory in Sentinella. This observatory was opened in 1902 to study the effects of meteorology, oceanography, volcanology, geodesy, seismology and hydrology. Here you will see various instruments for measuring earthquake activity including that of a seismic “bath” which was created by Grablovitz in the 19th Century.
