Cefalù, Italy
Italy is a beautiful country with many interesting places like the city of Cefalu for you to visit. The city of Cefalu is located in the province of Palermo. It lies on the northern coast line of Sicily by the Tyrrhenian Sea. While visitors to Sicily will find many wonderful places to relax in, you will find that Cefalu and its surrounding areas with their many interesting places to visit and activities to do is one of the major tourist attractions to be found in this region. You will be able to relax and engage your senses in both sightseeing, relaxing on the beach and enjoy the local atmosphere and food.
Of the many interesting places that you can visit while you are Cefalu you may be interested in seeing the Santa Maria dell’Odigitria which is popularly called Itria. This beautiful building was built in the 16th century. Up until 1961 you would have been able to find two religious structures at this site. The second structure was used as a chapel which was devoted to St. Michael Archangel. The chapel and the other religious building were the property of the Confraternity of St. Mary of the Odigitria.
You will find there are many other places such as the Abbey of Thelema in Cefalu that you can visit while you are exploring this city. The Abbey was established by Aleister Crowley who was an occultist in 1920. The Abbey was used by Crowley as a magical commune until he was forced to leave in 1923 by the order of the Benito Mussolini government. Today you will find only the ruins of this abbey to marvel at.
Of the main attractions that you will find in Cefalu is that of the Cathedral of Cefalu. This cathedral was built in 1131 in a mix of both Norman and Sicilian Romanesque architectural styling. An interesting focal point from the outside that you will be able to look at is the two matching four storied strong towers which are set on flanking sides of the cathedral’s porch. The interior of the cathedral also has some magnificent works of art and sculpture that you may wish to look at. These will include Byzantine mosaic work from about 1148.
From this Cathedral of Cefalu the next places of interest you may wish to explore are some of the city’s palazzos. These palazzos are the Palazzo Piraino which was built in the 16th century. You should also take a look at the Palazzo Atenasio Martino which was built in the 15th century. The courtyard will allow you to see a magnificent example of 16th century frescoes. And finally you may enjoy a visit to the Palazzo Maria which was built in the 13th century. Here in this palazzo you will be able to look at the medieval portal and a mullioned window. On this window you will be able to look at the Catalan-style vegetable decorations which can still be seen.
These then are just a few of the interesting places that you will be able to find when you come to Cefalu.
