Cortona, Italy
For many visitors who come to Italy they have seldom heard about places like Cortona. Instead they may head for places like Milan, Venice or even Lido di Camaiore. While these are great places to visit you really should come and see Cortona. This town which is in the province of Arezzo Tuscany is a beautiful place to see as at a height of 600 meters you will be able to see magnificent panoramas in every direction that you turn to.
As with many places in Italy you will find that Cortona holds its fair share of attractions for you to see. These will include places like the Diocesan Museum. Here in the museum you will find various exhibits including a group of work which was done by Giuseppe Maria Crespi. Crespi who was also known as Lo Spagnuolo, created the magnificent masterpiece which is called the Ecstasy of St. Margaret. In addition to this work of art and the others displayed in the museum, you will find two of the town's chief artistic treasures. These are two panels which were done by Fra Angelico. The panels are the Madonna and Child with Saints and the Annunciation.
In addition to visiting the museum you may be interested in seeing some of Cortona’s piazzas. As these are numerous you may want to find out what these are called and where they are located. To help you a few of them are listed here. The most famous piazza is that of the Piazza della Repubblica. As this is the most famous piazza in Cortona you will find that it is quite crowded. If you aren’t too fond of crowds then you may enjoy visiting the Piazza Signorelli which is located next to the Piazza della Repubblica and is much less crowded.
During Sundays the Piazza Signorelli has a flea market where they sell antiques. The final piazza to be looked at is that of Piazza Garibaldi. This piazza was built by the French during the Napoleonic wars. Another interesting place you should visit is that of the Roman road of Torreone. Here you have the choice of starting from Torreone and hiking all the way up to Guglielmesca. On the other hand you can drive up to Guglielmesca and then walk all the way down to Torreone. Likewise you could travel through the woods of the Cortona hills which are indicated as CAI trail number 561. Along this trail about halfway up you will be provided with a stunning view over Cortona and the Valdichiana.
From seeing the sights to seeing festivals you will find that Cortona is the ideal place. Once such festival that you might want to see in Cortona is that of the Tuscan Sun Festival. The Cortona Tuscan Sun Festival an annual event which occurs in summer. At this festival you will see some great concerts performed by some of the world’s most acclaimed musical artists. There will be fantastic exhibitions with leading visual artists and you can hear discussions with top literary figures. To top this event you will be able to taste some of the culinary delights of the finest chefs and winemakers both in Italy and the world.
