Ferrara, Italy
In the country of Italy you will find the city of Ferrara. This city is located in northern Italy and it is the capital city of the Province of Ferrara. The city is well planned and you can find lots of palaces which date from the 14th and 15th centuries. In addition to these gorgeous palaces you will find that Ferrara has wide streets which do not detract from the beauty of the city. The city itself can be found near the Po di Volano branch channel of the River Po.
Since the city of Ferrara has many beautiful places of historic interest and cultural importance it has come under the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you be able to see these buildings and other places of interest as you wander around the city.
You will find the most iconic building Ferrara is that of the Castello Estense. This building is located in the very centre of the town. You will see that it is a brick building which is surrounded by a moat and there are four massive bastions which provide an illusion of defence to the building. The Castello Estense was built in 1385. It was then partly restored in 1554. However the restoration process is not complete. The pavilions which can be seen on the top of the towers were added in later on.
From this sight you may wish to see the Corpus Domini Monastery. Here you will see many tombs from the House of Este. These tombs will include such personages like Alfonso I, Alfonzo II, Eleanor of Aragon, Lucrezia Borgia, Ercole I and Ercole II and there are many other people who have been buried here. If you are not interested in seeing these tombs you may like to tour around the monastery itself and see the beauty of this place of worship.
Another interesting place for you to visit while you are in Ferrara is that of the City Historical Archives. This building contains various historical documents about Ferrara and the surrounding region. You will find these documents start from the 15th century. Another great place to see some historical documents can be found at the Diocesan Historical Archive. This archive collection is more ancient and you will see there are many precious documents which have been collected across the centuries by the clergy.
In Ferrara you will see there are many wonderful palaces that you can visit. Of these the finest palace you will see is that of Palazzo dei Diamanti which is known in English as the Diamond Palace. The palace’s name was thus given due to the diamond points into which the palace’s facade stone blocks were cut. Today you will see the palazzo is the home of the National Picture Gallery.
As with many cities in the world you will find there is so much to see and do while you are on vacation. For this reason you might want to take a few moments to capture the beauty of Ferrara before you embark on another round of memory making.
