Florence, Italy

Florence is the capital city of Italian Region of Tuscany and of the province of Florence. The city lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the middle ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the middle ages. It was long under the de facto ruler of the Medici family. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

Florence has been divided into four Quarters in the fourteenth century. They are Santa Maria Novella, San Giovanni, Santa Croce, and Santo Spirito. Florence is known as the “cradle of Renaissance” for its monuments, churches and buildings. At the heart of the city in Piazza Della Signoria is Bartolomeo Ammanati's Fountain of Neptune which is a masterpiece of marble sculpture at the terminus of a still functioning Roman aqueduct.

Florence is rich in Religious architecture. Some of them include Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, San Giovanni Baptistery, Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Basilica of Santa Croce, Basilica of San Lorenzo, Santo Spirito, Orsanmichele, Santissima Annunziata, Ognissanti, Santa Maria del Carmine, Santa Trinita, San Marco, Santa Felicita, Badia Fiorentina, San Gaetano, San Miniato al Monte, Florence Charterhouse, and Great Synagogue of Florence.

Civil Architecture includes Palazzo Vecchio, Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Palazzo Pitti, Palazzo Strozzi, Palazzo Rucellai, Palazzo Davanzati, Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali, Palazzo Spini Feroni, Tribunal of Florence.
Tourism is the most significant industry within the centre of Florence. On any given day between April and October, the local population is greatly outnumbered by tourists from all over the world. The Uffizi and Accademia museums are regularly sold out of tickets, and large groups regularly fill the basilicas of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella, both of which charge for entry.

Florence keeps an exceptional artistic heritage. Cimabue and Giotto, the fathers of Italian painting, lived in Florence as well as Arnolfo and Andrea Pisano, renewers of architecture and sculpture; Brunelleschi, Donatello and Masaccio forefathers of the Renaissance, Ghiberti and the Della Robbias, Filippo Lippi and Angelico; Botticelli, Paolo Uccello and the universal genius of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Their work, together with those of many other generations of artists up to the artists of our century, is gathered in the several museums of the town: the Uffizi, the most selected gallery in the world, the Palatina gallery with the paintings of the "Golden Ages”. Florentine, spoken by inhabitants of Florence and its environs, is a Tuscan dialect and an immediate parent language to modern Italian.
“Historic Florentine Football” sometimes called Calcio in costume, is a traditional sport, regarded as a forerunner of soccer, though the actual game play most closely resembles rugby. The event originates from the middle Ages, when the most important Florentine nobles amused themselves playing while wearing magnificent costumes.

Florence is the most prominent economic center of the Italian Renaissance. Florence acted as the center of banking while Venice was the focus of commerce and trade. In Florence similar business structure models and guild functions arose. Each also had unique features with regard to their major industries and functioning of the local government.
